The Cerritos
College wrestling team had two individual weight
champions and three others reach the finals, as
the team came in second place at the Cerritos
Tournament on Saturday. The Falcons, who
compiled 150.5 team points, were beat out by
South Coast Conference rival Santa Ana College,
who had five individual champions and finished
with 162.5 team points. East Los Angeles (102.5
team points), Moorpark (101.5), Rio Hondo (72)
and Victor Valley (54) rounded out the teams in
the tournament. It was the second week in a row
that the Falcons came in second place at a
tournament. The team will now enter the Santa
Ana Tournament, which will start at 9:00 a.m.
next Saturday.
Winning their weight classes
were sophomores
David
Razo (La Quinta HS) at 157
pounds and
Al
Kinslow (Santa Monica HS) at 197
pounds. It was the first tournament of the
season for Razo, who opened with a fall of Steve
Mena of East Los Angeles College in 1:38 and
then posted a 14-5 major decision over Jeff
Peterson, also of ELAC. That advanced him to the
championship match, where Razo came away with an
8-1 win against Moorpark College’s Octavio
Lucatero. As for Kinslow, who came in third
place at the Sacramento City Tournament last
weekend, he pinned his first two opponents to
reach the finals. It took him 4:34 to beat
Richard Diaz of ELAC and only 1:20 to pin Kevin
Chilton of Victor Valley College. After falling
behind 2-1 to Michael Salcido of East Los
Angeles in the finals, Kinslow scored the next
four points and posted a 5-2 win.
Sophomore 165-pound
Jordan Serrano (North Torrance HS)
opened with a close 5-4 win and then pinned
Chris Riefstahl of Moorpark College in 4:25 to
advance to the championships. But he was on the
wrong end of a fall against Dylan Sweet of Santa
Ana College and had to settle for second place.
It was the same for freshman
Adam
Hase (Long Beach Millikan HS),
who received a bye in the first two rounds. In
the semi-finals, Hase defeated freshman teammate
Mike Mehegan (West Torrance HS),
7-4 but was then defeated by East LA’s James
Clay, 6-3. Freshman heavyweight
Juan Enriquez (John Glenn HS)
also defeated a teammate in the semi-finals, as
he posted a 2-0 decision over sophomore
Chip
Baker (Paramount HS). But, in the
finals Tyler Porras of Santa Ana College had his
hands full before coming away with a 3-2 win.
Other
Falcons who wrestled well include sophomore
Jason Carrillo (Torrance HS), who
came in third place at 133 pounds; freshmen
Mike Koehnlein (Marina HS) and
Kevin Rayford (Marina HS), who
came in third and fourth places, respectively,
at 141 pounds; sophomore
Gene
Choi (North Torrance HS), a third
place finisher at 174 pounds, while Mehegan and
Baker finished in fourth place at their weight
classes.
