Sophomore 141-pound
Mike
Koehnlein (Marina HS) and
freshman 157-pound Eric Sauvageau
both won all four of their matches at the Cuesta
Tournament over the weekend to help the Cerritos
College wrestling team finish in second place. The
Falcons compiled 120 team points and trailed only
Santa Ana College, who won the tournament with 142
team points. Cerritos will now resume their South
Coast Conference schedule at host East Los Angeles
College at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
The Falcons, who
had 18 entries in the tournament, saw seven others
finish in the top six, with three reaching the
championship match of their respective weight
classifications. Freshman
Joe
Cabanas (Canyon Springs HS)
advanced to the finals at 125 pounds, but was
defeated, 4-2 by Santa Ana's Jimmy Martinez. As for
freshman 184-pound
Caleb Gerl
(Calvary Chapel HS), he won his first three
matches to reach the championships. However, he was
defeated, 12-6 in the finals. As for sophomore
285-pound
Juan
Enriquez (John Glenn HS), he
suffered a 7-1 loss in the finals to Matt Gibson of
Sierra College after winning his first three
matches.
Freshman
Ryan
Giovenco (North Torrance HS)
was matched up against sophomore teammate
Ryan
Richards (El Segundo HS) in
the third place match at 133 pounds. After wrestling
to a 3-3 tie through the first two periods, Giovenco
recorded an escape point to start the third period
and held on for the 4-3 victory and third place.
Sophomore
Adam Hase
(Long Beach Millikan HS) also reached the
third place match at 174 pounds, but was defeated,
7-5 by Johnny Anderson o Mt. San Antonio College.
After an early loss, sophomore
Mike
Mehegan (West Torrance HS)
came back to finish in sixth place at 197 pounds.
