Thanks to two
pins, a forfeit and pair of technical falls, the
Cerritos College wrestling team posted a 36-12 South
Coast Conference win at home over East Los Angeles
College on Wednesday night. The Falcons (8-2
overall, 2-1 SCC) will now travel north to take part
in the San Francisco State Tournament on Saturday.
The match opened
with sophomore 285-pound
Juan
Enriquez (John Glenn HS)
needing only 41 seconds to pin Alexander Yi.
Enriquez, who's ranked #2 in the state, set the tone
for the match, as the Falcons opened a 25-0 lead
after the first five matches. Freshman
Joe
Cabanas (Canyon Springs HS),
ranked #3 in the state at 125 pounds, opened a 7-1
lead after the first period and rolled to a 16-5
victory over Josh Quezada.
Sophomore
Ryan
Richards (El Segundo HS)
recorded three near-falls in his 18-3 technical fall
victory at 133 pounds, while sophomore 141-pound
Mike
Koehnlein (Marina HS) received
a forfeit win. Koehnlein is currently ranked #1 in
the state. Freshman
Tilman
Tran (Loara HS) broke open a
close 2-1 match after the first period with a
three-point near-fall with 1:39 remaining in the
second and upped his lead to 7-3 by the end of the
period. He finished his 11-3 win with an escape,
reversal and a point for riding time.
A pair of Huskie
wins preceded a pin by sophomore 174-pound
Adam Hase
(Long Beach Millikan HS) over Ceasar Ponce
in 3:45, while 2nd-ranked freshman
Caleb Gerl
(Downey Calvary Chapel HS) posted a 17-0
technical fall win over Antoine Flores. The match
was closed out with a 7-6 win by Richard Diaz over
sophomore
Mike
Mehegan (West Torrance HS) at
197 pounds. Trailing most of the match, Mehegan
picked up an escape point with three seconds left in
the second period to make it a 6-5 deficit, while he
escaped out with eight seconds left in the third.
However, Diaz had accumulated 2:41 of riding time
for the game-winning point.
