The Cerritos
College wrestling team registered a 23-12 win over
Palomar College on Wednesday to move into a second
place tie in the South Coast Conference with the
Comets. Ranked #3 in the state, the Falcons (9-2
overall, 3-1 SCC) will host Mt. San Antonio College
at 7:00 p.m. next Wednesday in their final dual
match.
With the match
tied 9-9 after the first six matches, Cerritos
received a pin by freshman
Daniel
Wosik (Bonanza, NV HS) at 174
pounds to give the Falcons a lead they would not
relinquish. Wosik, who's ranked #7 in the state at
165 pounds, moved up a weight and pinned Travis
Tielens in just 2:10. Not missing a beat, freshman
Caleb Gerl (Calvary Chapel HS)
recorded a technical fall over Derek Flesher at 184
pounds for a 20-9 Falcon lead. The #2-ranked Gerl
opened up a 7-1 lead after the first period with
three near falls and extended his lead to 14-1 after
two periods. The match ended at 17-1 when Gerl
escaped from the mat and got a takedown for the
15-point technical fall requirement.
The 11-point lead
with two matches meant that the Comets would need
two pins to win the match, but after freshman
197-pound
Mario
Delgado (North Torrance HS)
was defeated, 8-5, it secured the team win.
Sophomore 285-pound
Juan
Enriquez (John Glenn HS),
ranked #2 in the state, posted a 2-1 win over
Anthony Kelly to close out the match.
Also winning for
the Falcons were sophomore 133-pound
Ryan
Richards (El Segundo HS), a
12-11 winner over Danny Varela after picking up a
riding time point to break the tie. Top-ranked
Mike
Koehnlein (Marina HS) won his
141-pound match, 8-7 over Jose Mondragon, while
freshman Eric Sauvageau, ranked #4
at 157 pounds, posted a 7-2 victory.
