The Cerritos
College wrestling team, ranked #3 in the state,
finished off their regular season at home on
Wednesday night with a 32-12 South Coast Conference
win over eighth-ranked Mt. San Antonio. The Falcons
finished in second place in the conference with a
4-1 record, while they improved to 10-2 on the
season, with the Mounties finishing up 2-3 and 11-6.
Cerritos will now rest up in preparation for the
Southern California Regional Tournament, which will
be held at West Hills College on December 6.
It was a quick
12-0 lead for the Falcons, who received byes at 125
and 133 pounds, while sophomore
Mike
Koehnlein (Marina HS) upped
the lead to 18-0 with a pin over Ray McQueen in 6:34
at 141 pounds. Koehnlein, ranked #1 in the state,
was leading 9-0 at the time of his win. Sophomore
Bryan
Mecinas (Santa Fe HS) posted a
hard-fought 7-4 win at 149 pounds after coming back
from a 3-1 deficit after two periods. With the match
tied at 4-4, Mecinas recorded a reversal with 28
seconds left and earned an extra point for his 2:27
of riding time.
With the outcome
already decided, the best match of the night came at
197 pounds, with sophomore
Mike
Mehegan (West Torrance HS)
facing fourth-ranked Julian Silva. Down 12-2 early
in the third period, Mehegan made his move with a
reversal out of a near fall to get to within 12-4.
With the clock running out, Mehegan used all the
strength he could muster and threw Silva over his
back with 17 seconds remaining and was primed for a
thrilling comeback win with a near pin. But the
clock ran out just as the referee was about to award
Mehegan the win, but he ran out of time and suffered
a 13-7 loss. Megehan, in his disgust, cost his team
two points by throwing his headgear and removed his
singlet off his shoulder while still on the mat.
The turning point
in the victory came at 174 pounds with the Falcons
leading, 21-9. Sophomore
Adam Hase
(Long Beach Millikan HS) was facing
sixth-ranked Jon Anderson and fell behind quickly,
2-0. But Hase responded with a reversal and a pair
of near-falls before pinning Anderson with four
seconds left in the first period. Also winning for
Cerritos were freshman
Caleb Gerl
(Downey Calvary Chapel HS), a 10-0 winner
at 184 pounds and sophomore 285-pound
Juan
Enriquez (John Glenn HS), who
posted a 2-0 win. Both wrestlers are ranked #2 in
their respective weight classes.
