The Cerritos
College wrestling team had four place winners at the
Santa Ana Tournament on Saturday which helped them
come in fourth place with 94 team points. Sierra
College won the tournament with 177.5 team points,
while Santa Ana College (146.5 team points) and
Fresno City College (111.5 team points) also
finished ahead of the Falcons. This Saturday,
Cerritos will travel up north to compete in the West
Valley Tournament.
The lone champion
at the tournament was freshman 197-pound
Caleb Gerl
(Calvary Chapel HS), who was ranked #2 and
defeated four opponents to come in first place. In
the championship match, Gerl posted a 2-0 win over
Sal Feliccia of Rio Hondo College, who was the
top-seeded wrestler at that weight. Sophomore
285-pounder
Juan
Enriquez (John Glenn HS)
entered the tournament ranked #1 and advanced to the
championship match after three wins, with two coming
by way of pins. In the championships, he was
defeated, 6-1 by Matt Gibson of Sierra College.
At 133 pounds,
freshman
Ryan
Giovenco (North Torrance HS)
was also ranked #1 and suffered defeat in the
championships and had to settle for second place.
After receiving byes in the first two rounds,
Giovanco registered two wins before a 15-2 setback
at the hands of Justen Lockling of Sacramento City
College, who was ranked #2. In the 141-pound weight
classification, top-seeded sophomore
Mike
Koehnlein (Marina HS) advanced
to the semi-finals with two wins, but was defeated
by Sierra College's Todd Wilcox, 9-8. Dropping into
the consolation bracket, Koehnlein went on to win
two more matches, including a 15-0 technical fall in
the third place match over Bryan Williams of
Sacramento City College.
