Koehnlien (Marina HS) and
freshman
Caleb Gerl
(Calvary Chapel HS) each went undefeated at
the West Valley Tournament to win their respective
weight classes, as the Cerritos College wrestling
team finished in fifth place on Saturday. Koehnlein
won all four of his matches at 141 pounds to win the
title, while Gerl moved up to 184 pounds and
defeated four opponents to win the championship. The
team will now compete in the South Regional Duals on
Saturday, which will take place at Moorpark College.
For Koehnlein, who
was seeded first, he recorded a pair of technical
falls to advance to the semi-finals, where he posted
a 6-1 win over Stefan De La Cruz of Chabot College.
In the championship match, Koehnlein defeated Mike
Vasser of Sierra College, 5-2. As for Gerl, who had
been competing at 197 pounds, he was seeded second.
After opening with a 17-0 technical fall, he won,
4-2 over Justin Gomez of Santa Ana College to reach
the semi-finals. Gerl then beat Steven Urquizo of
Fresno City College, 5-1 to reach the championships,
where he posted a 15-3 major decision over
top-seeded Matt Garcia of West Hills College.

285-pounder
Juan
Enriquez (John Glenn HS) was
seeded second and pinned his first two opponents
before a 5-1 win over John Hernandez of Moorpark
College to reach the finals. Against top-seeded Matt
Gibson of Sierra College, Enriquez found himself on
the wrong side of a pin, and was defeated in 1:14.
With freshman Eric Sauvageau at 157
pounds, he was seeded fourth and won his first two
matches to reach the semi-finals. In that match, he
was defeated 14-4 by eventual champion Alfonso
Sanchez of Fresno City College and dropped to the
consolation bracket. Sauvageau rebounded and beat
Daniel Kennedy (Santa Ana), 12-6 before winning 7-2
over Frankie Flores of Modesto College to come in
third place.

Ryan
Giovenco (North Torrance HS)
at 133 pounds. After a pin in 2:08 advanced him to
the next rounds, he was beaten 15-0 by eventual
champion Gabe Aguilar of Santa Ana and sent to the
consolation round. Two wins got him closer to
competing for third place, but he was injured in his
13-1 win over Kenny Smith of Sierra College and had
to default out of the next two scheduled matches and
settled for sixth place.
