For the third year
in a row, the Cerritos College wrestling team
advanced to the championship match of the Southern
California Dual Meet Tournament, which was held at
Moorpark College on Saturday. The Falcons, who
defeated the host Raiders (32-18) and Mt. San
Antonio College (36-7), faced South Coast Conference
opponent Santa Ana College in the finals. Last year,
the team lost to Palomar College in the finals,
while two years ago they tied Santa Ana, but lost on
criteria. Prior to the start of the tournament on
Saturday, three Cerritos wrestlers did not make
weight, and the team ended up suffering their first
loss of the season, 23-13 to the Dons. The team will
now travel to Victor Valley College on Wednesday at
7:00 p.m. for a conference match.
In the
championship match, Cerritos was only able to win
four of the 10 matches, while they suffered one loss
by pin. Sophomore
Mike
Koehnlein (Marina HS) came
through with an 11-3 win at 141 pounds, with
freshman Eric Sauvageau winning his
157-pound match with a 7-4 score. Freshman
Caleb Gerl
(Calvary Chapel HS) and sophomore
Juan
Enriquez (John Glenn HS)
joined Koehnlein and Sauvageau by both closing out
their day by going undefeated with their respective
wins. Gerl, at 184 pounds, registered a 7-2 win,
with 285-pound Enriquez collecting a 2-0 win with a
first period escape point and riding time.
The Falcons
recorded two pins and received a bye in the win over
Mt. San Antonio, with Koehnlein (4:11) and freshman
165-pound
Daniel
Wosik (Bonanza, NV HS), who
won in 55 seconds, each collecting pins. Sophomore
Ryan
Richards (El Segundo HS)
received a bye win at 133 pounds, with Gerl (6-3)
and Enriquez (6-2) being joined by freshmen
Joe
Cabanas (Canyon Springs HS)
and
Bryan
Mecinas (Santa Fe HS) at 125
and 149 pounds, respectively. Cabanas posted a 5-2
win, while Mesinas won handily, 16-3.
The tournament
opened with Cerritos receiving byes at three weights
and Cabanas winning by a pin in 2:25 at 125 pounds.
Koehnlein posted a major win at 141 pounds with his
17-0 victory, while Enriquez shut out his opponent,
