After pulling
ahead 15-14 after a 6-3 win by freshman 184-pound
Caleb Gerl (Calvary Chapel HS),
freshman
Mario
Delgado (North Torrance HS)
was defeated by a pin in the 197 weight class in the
Cerritos College South Coast Conference wrestling
match at Santa Ana College on Wednesday night. Down,
20-15, it meant that sophomore 285-pound
Juan
Enriquez (John Glenn HS) would
have to pin his opponent in the final match for the
Falcons to win. Although Enriquez won, 2-1, it only
gave Cerritos three team points, which meant the
#3-rated Falcons were defeated, 20-18 by the
#2-rated Dons. The loss also dropped the team to 1-1
in conference action and 7-2 on the year. They will
now compete in the Cuesta Tournament over the
weekend.
Trailing after the
first seven weights, Cerritos didn't take their
first lead until a pin by sophomore
Adam Hase
(Long Beach Millikan HS) in 1:40 at 174
pounds, followed by the win by Gerl in the next
match. The Falcons lost the first two matches, but
saw sophomore 141-pound
Mike
Koehnlein (Marina HS) post a
6-5 win to get the team on the board. The only other
Cerritos wrestler to win was freshman Eric
Sauvageau at 157 pounds.
The match also
featured four head-to-head matches of ranked
wrestlers, with each team winning two. At 125
pounds, third-ranked Jaime Martinez upset #2-ranked
Falcon freshman
Joe
Cabanas (Canyons Springs HS),
8-3, while #7-ranked Kyle Roe pinned sixth-ranked
Delgado in the 197-pound match. Cerritos saw
Koehnlien, who's ranked #1 and Enriquez (ranked #2)
post wins.
