Although 16 teams recorded points at the Cerritos
College Wrestling Invitational on Saturday, it was
the Falcons that supplied five of those teams. With
each team only able to qualify one wrestler per
weight class, Cerritos showed off their depth by
having five wrestlers in at least one weight
classification. The starting Falcon team placed
second overall with 95.5 team points and trailed
only South Coast Conference rival Santa Ana College,
who won the tournament with 105 team points.
However, if all five Falcon teams added their
points, they would have 163 team points, while the
two Santa Ana teams compiled 143 team points.
The Falcons will
now travel to Mt. San Antonio College for the Mt.
San Antonio Duals at 9:00 a.m. next Saturday.
There were four
individual champions for Cerritos, with three coming
from the starting lineup. At 133 pounds, the Falcons
swept the top four places, with freshman
Ryan
Giovenco (North Torrance HS)
winning the weight, as he beat sophomore teammate
Ryan Richards
(El Segundo HS) in the finals.
Placing third and fourth respectively were freshman
James Potter (Buena Park HS)
and sophomore
Matt
Holiday (Camp Verde, AZ HS).
At 125 pounds, freshman
Joe
Cabanas (Canyon Springs HS)
posted a win over Nolan Johnson (Santa Ana College)
in the finals, with sophomore
Mike
Koehnlein (Marina HS)
also defeating a Don (Bobby
Scofield) at 141 pounds for the championship.
Sophomore
Bronson
Gerl (Calvary Chapel HS)
got off to a solid start to the year, as he came in
first place at 157 pounds, beating Stephen
Acklin of Modesto College in the finals.
Two other Falcons
reached the finals, but came up short, with freshman
Daniel
Wosik (Bonanza, NV HS)
getting beat by Luis
Onfre of Santa Ana at 174 pounds, with
freshman
Caleb
Gerl (Calvary Chapel HS)
coming up short against Matt Garcia of West Hills
College at 197 pounds. Also placing in the top four
of the tournament were freshman Eric
Sauvageau, who came in third place
at 165 pounds, sophomore
Holmer Rivera
(West Torrance HS), a third place finisher
at 184 pounds, and freshman
Mario
Delgado (North Torrance HS), a
fourth place finisher at 197 pounds.
