09.20.08 - CERRITOS WINS MT. SAC DUALS
In their first dual matches of the season, the Cerritos College wrestling team showed all involved that they are a team to be reckoned with throughout the year. The Falcons, who came in second place in their tournament last weekend, defeated four opponents to win the Mt. San Antonio Dual Meet Tournament championship. Cerritos (4-0) made quick work of both Rio Hondo College (31-16) and Moorpark College (42-9) in their bracket. They then followed with a win over West Hills College (38-13) and rounded out the tournament with a 26-10 win over Santa Ana, who was also unbeaten heading into the final match. The team will now travel to the Modesto Tournament, which starts at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday.

In the clinching win over Santa Ana, the Falcons opened by winning the first three matches, with 125-pound Joe Cabanas (Canyon Springs HS), 133-pound Ryan Giovenco (North Torrance HS) and 141-pound Mike Koehnlein (Marina HS) all posting wins. Then, with the score 13-10, sophomore Adam Hase (Long Beach Millikan HS) pinned Justin Gomez in 2:05 at 184 pounds for a 19-10 lead. Freshman 197-pound Caleb Gerl (Calvary Chapel HS) and sophomore heavyweight Juan Enriquez (John Glenn HS) closed out with win with victories of their own.

Three pins helped secure the win over West Hills, with sophomore 133-pound Ryan Richards (El Segundo HS), freshman 157-pound Eric Sauvageau and freshman 157-pound Daniel Wosik (Bonanza, NV HS) all scored six points for the Falcons. Sophomore Matt Holliday (Camp Verde, AZ HS) and Koehnlein each received forfeit wins, while Gerl (16-1) and Enriquez (6-0) also posted victories.

The tournament opened with a trio of pins by the Falcons to help them to defeat Rio Hondo. Giovenco pinned his opponent in 1:42 at 133 pounds, while freshman Tilman Tran (Loara HS) needed just 55 seconds to post his pin at 149 pounds. Hase eclipsed that time, with his pin taking only 44 seconds at 184 pounds. Freshman James Potter (Buena Park HS) posted an 11-2 win at 141 pounds, with Enriquez winning, 3-0. Sophomore Dean Dutzy (West Torrance HS) picked up a forfeit win at 165 pounds.

The Falcons made quick work of Moorpark, even though Holliday was pinned in the first match of the event. Richards (11-1), Koehnlein (15-0) and sophomore Bronson Gerl (Calvary Chapel HS), who pinned his opponent in 1:57, restored order for Cerritos. Freshman Timothy Garnica (North Torrance HS) picked up an 8-2 win at 157 pounds, with Dutzy (4-0) winning, as did sophomore Mike Mehegan (West Torrance HS), who needed 4:08 to post his win at 197 pounds.
