As the lone team
from Southern California at the Modesto Tournament
on Saturday, the Cerritos College wrestling team won
four weight classes and placed second in four others
to capture the tournament championship. The Falcons
finished with 119 team points and beat out Fresno
City, who finished with 113.5 team points. The team
will now stay local and compete in the Santa Ana
Tournament at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday.
Winning their
weight classifications at the Modesto Tournament
were sophomore 133-pound
Ryan
Richards (El Segundo HS),
sophomore 141-pound
Mike
Koehnlein (Marina HS),
freshman 197-pound
Caleb Gerl
(Calvary Chapel HS) and sophomore 285-pound
Juan
Enriquez (John Glenn HS). Four
others advanced to the championship match, but were
defeated and included freshman 125-pound Joe
Cabanas (Canyon Springs HS),
sophomore 149-pound
Bronson
Gerl (Calvary Chapel HS),
freshman 165-pound
Daniel
Wosik (Bonanza, NV HS) and
freshman 197-pound
Mario
Delgado (North Torrance HS),
who was defeated by Caleb Gerl.
Richards, who was
seeded third, was one of four Falcons competing at
133 pounds. He was able to avoid any teammates in
his four wins, and capped the tournament off with a
6-0 win over Galen Williams of Fresno City College.
Top-seeded freshman
Ryan
Giovenco (North Torrance HS) lost in
the semi-finals to Williams, but came back and
placed third.
At 141 pounds,
Koehnlein was the lone Falcon and was seeded first.
After receiving a bye in the first round, he posted
a 17-2 win before consecutive 7-2 scores won him the
title. In the finals, he defeated Modesto College's
Daniel Osmar, who advanced to the finals on the
strength of two injury default wins. Caleb Gerl was
one of four Cerritos wrestlers at 197 pounds and
after two lopsided wins, he defeated Delgado in the
finals, 10-6. With freshman
Jibri
Jackson (Western HS), he lost
to Delgado in the semi-finals and had to settle for
fourth place after losing to BJ Moseley (Sacramento
City), 7-6 in the third place match. Enriquez had
little trouble winning the 285-pound title as the
top-seed. After a bye in the first round, he posted
, 7-1 and 8-4 wins before a 3-0 victory over Austin
Garcia of Fresno City in the finals.
For the
tournament, Cerritos entered 28 wrestlers and had 11
of them finish in the top four places.
