The Cerritos
College wrestling team will be sending seven
wrestlers to the State Championships next Friday and
Saturday at Chabot College after they finished in
third place at the Southern California Regional

College won the championship with 177.5 team points,
while Mt. San Antonio College was second with 139
points, with Cerritos finishing in third with 132
points. The Falcons saw sophomore
Caleb Gerl
(Calvary Chapel HS) win his second straight
Southern California Championship at 184 pounds,
while freshman 285-pound
Jose
Lopez (John Glenn HS) also won
the championship at his weight.
In addition to the
two champions, Cerritos had one second place
finisher, two third places and four come in fourth
place. Joining Gerl and Lopez will be sophomore
Andy
Yu (Cerritos HS), who came in
third place at 125 pounds, sophomore

fourth place finisher at 133 pounds, freshman

came in fourth place at 149 pounds, sophomore

who placed second at 157 pounds, freshman
Alfonso
Estrada (Perris HS), a third

not send anyone at 141 pounds, while freshman

was a last-minute replacement at 174 pounds due to
an injury to freshman
Andy Jay
(Mesa, AZ HS) and placed seventh.
For Caleb Gerl, he
entered as the #2-seed at 184 pounds and posted a
pin in 2:59 in his first match before a 4-2 win over
Luis Onofre of Santa Ana College sent him to the
finals. In that match, he escaped with a 3-2 win
over top-seeded George Munoz of Mt. San Antonio
College for the title. As the top-seed at 285
pounds, Lopez also opened with a quick pin in his
first round match, needing only 45 seconds. He
followed that with a 2-1 win over Kasey Cowan of
Palomar College, while a 5-2 win over Frank Ayala of
Mt. San Antonio secured the championship.
Reaching the
championship match at 157 pounds, Bronson Gerl
posted a 5-4 upset of #2-seeded Chris Abeyta of Mt.
San Antonio in the semi-finals to reach the
championship match. He opened with a pin in 4:28
before with win over Abeyta, but suffered a pin in
the championship match against Santa Ana's Ted
Bristol. At 125 pounds, Yu was the #5-seed but
opened with an 8-5 win over #4-seeded AJ Jaramillo
of West Hills College in his first match. That was
followed by a loss to eventual champion Jimmy
Martinez of Santa Ana in the semi-finals. But Yu
rebounded with a pair of wins, including a 4-3
victory over Jaramillo for third place. At 165
pounds, Estrada was the #2-seed, but was upset in
the semi-finals by #6-seed and eventual champion
Alvaro Zermeno of Bakersfield College, 10-7. But he
also bounced back with a pair of wins to come in
third place, including a 7-6 win over RJ Pilkington
of Santa Ana.
