With four
wrestlers still in contention for individual state
championships, the Cerritos College wrestling team
is currently in fourth place with 53.5 team points
after the first day of the California Community
College Wrestling State Championships, which are
being held at Chabot College. The Falcons also have
three more wrestlers competing in the consolation
rounds after losing a match on the first day, while
two others were eliminated from the tournament.
Sophomore
184-pound
Caleb Gerl
(Calvary Chapel HS) and freshman 285-pound
Jose Lopez (John Glenn HS),
who were each top seeds in their respective weight
classes, easily won their only matches of the day to
move on to the semi-finals. Sophomore
Bronson Gerl (Calvary Chapel HS),
the #2-seed at 157 pounds, is also in the
semi-finals after winning his lone match, while
sophomore
Jeff Janecky (Lakewood HS)
pulled off a huge upset in his second match of the
day at 133 pounds The #4-seeded Janecky defeated the
North's top-seeded Dan Osmer of Fresno City College,
5-3 and is in the semi-finals.
Caleb Gerl had
little difficulty in pinning Todd Rucker of Shasta
College in 4:02. Leading 11-0 after the first period
where Gerl had three near-falls, he finished off
Rucker and will now square off against Justin Walker
of Fresno City College, who is seeded #2 from the
North. In a match where there was little offense,
Lopez came away with a 2-1 win over Casey Cowan of
Palomar College, which saw a pair of escapes and a
penalty point for stalling against Cowan. Lopez will
now face Anthony Gonzalez of Rio Hondo College, the
South's #3 seed after he defeated #2-seeded Richard
Segovia. Bronson Gerl also had a match where
stalling was a key factor in his 3-2 win over Shawn Brendle
of Sacramento City. He will now get a chance to face
top-seeded Tim Navarette of Shasta College in the
semi-finals.
Those who are
still competing include 125-pound sophomore
Andy Yu,
(Cerritos HS), freshman 149-pound
Jesse
Ponce (Mesa, AZ HS) and
freshman
Jacob
Eaton (Calvary Chapel HS).
Freshmen
Alfonso
Estrada (Perris HS) and
Daniel Walton (Orange Lutheran HS)
lost both of their matches and were eliminated.
