Looking to hold on
to fifth place at the California Community College
Wrestling State Championships at Chabot College, the
Cerritos College wrestling team will look to their
two wrestlers who have advanced to the finals in
their respective weights. The Falcons enter the
championship round with 84.5 team points and are in
fifth place, as they lead sixth place Shasta College
by five points.
Competing for
individual state championships are 184-pound
sophomore
Caleb Gerl
(Calvary Chapel HS) and 285-pound freshman
Jose Lopez (John Glenn HS).
This marks the second year in a row that Gerl has
advanced to the championship match.
In his semi-final
match, Gerl easily defeated Justin Walker of Fresno
City, as he recorded a 16-0 technical fall. It
marked the second straight match Gerl opened an 11-0
lead in the first period, as he pinned his first
opponent in 4:02. he will be facing Sierra College's
Jesus Chavez for the title. As for Lopez, he
advanced to the finals with a 6-2 win over Anthony
Gonzalez of Rio Hondo College. He opened a 2-0 lead
early in the first period and controlled the match
over Gonzalez the entire way. He will get to face
Austin Garza of Fresno City for the third time this
season in the finals. The two have split their two
matches.
Coming in fourth
place in his weight classification and earning
All-American status was sophomore 157-pound
Bronson Gerl (Calvary Chapel HS).
After reaching the semi-finals, he was defeated but
came back on Saturday and split his two matches.
Placing fifth for the Falcons were sophomore
125-pound
Andy Yu
(Cerritos HS) and 149-pound freshman
Jesse Ponce (Mesa, AZ HS),
while 133-pound sophomore
Jeff Janecky (Lakewood HS)
placed sixth with 197-pound freshman
Jacob
Eaton (Calvary Chapel HS)
coming in eighth place.
