This Week's Sports Schedule

11.04.09 - CERRITOS POSTS 22-16 WIN OVER MT. SAC
On the strength of winning the four lightest weights, along with heavyweight, the Cerritos College wrestling team parlayed that into a 22-16 South Coast Conference win at Mt. San Antonio College on Wednesday night. The victory improved the Falcons record to 8-3 overall, while they are 2-1 in conference action. The team will now take to the road and compete in the Northern Idaho Duals on Friday and then drive to Oregon for Mike Clock Open on Sunday.

After 125-pound Matthew Bautista (North Torrance HS) received a bye, sophomore Jeff Janecky (Lakewood HS) registered a 6-2 win at 133 pounds. After taking a 4-2 lead in the first period, Janecky recorded an escape point in the second period and added to his riding time in the third for the victory. It only took freshman Alex Razo (La Quinta HS) 2:08 to post a pin at 141 pounds, while freshman Jesse Ponce (Mesa, AZ HS) easily won his 149-pound match, 16-4. Freshman 285-pound Jose Lopez (John Glenn HS) had his hands full in his match, but escaped with a 4-3 win. It was a third period takedown that secured the win over Frank Ayala.

The Falcons did see a couple of their wrestlers suffer rare defeats, with the biggest upset coming at 184 pounds. Sophomore Caleb Gerl (Calvary Chapel HS), who reached the state championship match last year at the weight and was undefeated all season, suffered a 9-4 loss to George Munoz. Cerritos lost five of the nine matches, with Bronson Gerl (Calvary Chapel HS) dropping an 8-7 decision at 157 pounds and freshman Tim McMihelk (Canyon Springs HS) suffering a 7-4 setback at 197 pounds.
