Sophomore
Caleb Gerl
(Calvary Chapel HS) defeated all four of
his opponents to win the 184-pound championship at
the Mike Clock Open at Pacific University (OR) on
Sunday. The 12-school tournament consisted of
community colleges from the Northwest, as well as
Oregon State University. The Falcons also saw
freshman 285-pound
Jose
Lopez (John Glenn HS) advance
to the championship match, while freshman
Tim McMihelk (Canyon Springs HS)
placed third at 197 pounds. Cerritos will now resume
South Coast Conference action and host Victory
Valley College at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
In his first two
matches, Gerl posted 15-0 and 17-0 technical falls
before a disqualification advanced him to the
finals. In that match, he pinned Brandon Jackson of
Clackamas (OR) Community College in 2:52 to win the
title. Lopez was the top seed at his weight and
received a bye in the first round. After that he
posted a 10-0 win and then pinned Brandon Mosely of
Southern Oregon Community College in 3:20 to reach
the finals. In that match, he was defeated, 4-3 by
Nigel Bond of Yakima Valley (WA) Community College.
McMihelk posted a
major decision in his opening match, but was
defeated in the next round and dropped to the
consolation bracket. He went on to win three
straight matches, including a 12-4 major decision
over freshman teammate
Jacob
Eaton (Calvary Chapel HS). In
the third place match, McMihelk defeated
Casey Katchinska of Southern Oregon.
Also placing for
the Falcons were sophomore
Andy Yu
(Cerritos HS), who came in fourth place at
125 pounds, with sophomore
Matthew Bautista (North Torrance HS)
coming in sixth place at the same weight. Freshman
Jeff Janecky (Lakewood HS)
placed fourth at 133 pounds, as did freshman
Jesse
Ponce (Mesa, AZ HS) at 149
pounds. Sophomore
Bronson Gerl (Calvary Chapel HS)
was a sixth place finisher at 157 pounds.
Prior to the tournament, the Falcons were in Idaho and faced
both Highline (WA) Community College and Northern
Idaho Community College in dual meets. Cerritos was
defeated by Highline, 27-16 and by Northern Idaho,
33-9.
