Thanks in part to
three forfeit wins and a pair of pinfalls, the
Cerritos College wrestling team posted a 43-0 South
Coast Conference home win over Victor Valley College
on Wednesday night. The win improved the Falcons
record to 9-5 overall and 3-1 in conference action.
The team will now host the Cerritos Open, which will
take place on Saturday.
Cerritos saw
freshman
Clayton
Peters (Los Alamitos HS) take
only 2:30 to pin Michael Hope at 157 pounds, while
freshmen 285-pound
Jose Lopez (John Glenn HS)
needed just 2:05 to pin Kenny Walker. The Falcons
received forfeit wins at 125 pounds, 174 pounds and
197 pounds, while there was a double-forfeit at 184
pounds.
Also winning for
were sophomore
Andy Yu
(Cerritos HS), who registered an 8-6 win at
133 pounds, while sophomore
Jeff Janecky (Lakewood HS)
held off Andy Rust to win, 4-0 at 141 pounds. Yu
trailed 6-5 heading into the third period, but a
reversal with 1:43 put him ahead and he tacked on
another point with riding time. Janecky saw his 2-0
first period lead hold up, but struggled to get off
the mat in the second period. He used a reversal in
the third period to secure the win.
Freshman
Alex Razo
(La Quinta HS) came close to pinning
Jimmy Araiza at 149 pounds, but settled for a pair
of near falls in the first and second period. He led
7-0 before allowing a takedown, but reversed it to
take a 9-2 lead and wound up winning, 10-2. The
other winner on the night was freshman
Alfonso
Estrada (Perris HS) at 165
pounds, as he recorded an 8-3 win. Leading 4-2 after
the second period, Estrada had a quick escape and
takedown for a commanding lead and added riding
time.
