A pair of Cerritos
College wrestlers won their respective weight
classes at the Cerritos Open on Saturday, while
another placed second and two more finished in
third. The Falcons will now host Palomar College at
7:00 p.m. in their final South Coast Conference
match.
At 184 pounds,
sophomore
Caleb Gerl
(Calvary Chapel HS) needed to defeat only
two opponents to win his third tournament
championship at that weight and fourth on the
season. He opened with a 17-0 technical fall over
Kyle Matthews and finished it off with a 4-2
decision over Luis Onofre of Santa Ana College. As
for freshman
Juan
Lopez (John Glenn HS), he had
to beat four opponents to earn his second tournament
title to go along with his two second place
finishes. After a pair of falls over Eduardo Marquez
and Juan Durazo, Lopez posted a 3-1 win over Brian Klevies
of Santa Ana to advance to the finals. In that
match, he beat Frank Ayala of Mt. San Antonio
College, 4-1.
Freshman

Ponce (Mesa, AZ HS) won his
first three matches to reach the finals at 149
pounds, but was defeated, 9-2 by Jose Navarro of
Santa Ana College in the championship match. Along
the way, Ponce posted a 9-0 win, 16-1 technical fall
and a 15-5 decision, which sent him to the finals.
At 141 pounds, freshman

Quinta HS) worked his way through the
consolation bracket to finish in third place. He won
his first two matches and was then defeated in the
quarterfinals before rebounding with a pair of falls
to place third. It was the same for freshman
Alfonso
Estrada (Perris HS) at 165
pounds, who split his first two matches and then
won pair of matches to finish in third place.
Freshman teammate

Davis (Lassen HS) finished in
sixth place at the weight.
