The Cerritos
College wrestling team secured second place in the
South Coast Conference on Wednesday night with a
26-13 South Coast Conference win over Palomar
College. The Falcons (10-5 overall, 4-1 SCC) will
now compete in the Fullerton Open at Cal State
Fullerton on Saturday before entering the Southern
California Regional Championships, which will take
place on December 5 at East Los Angeles College.>
In winning the
match over the Comets, Cerritos was aided by a pair
of forfeit wins, while the teams split the four
matches that were held. The two big winners for the
Falcons were sophomore
Caleb Gerl
(Calvary Chapel HS) at 184 pounds and
freshman
Andy Jay
(Mesa, AZ HS) at 174 pounds. Gerl, who
reached the state championship match at that weight
last year, posted a 13-0 win over Chris Herrera and
came close on two occasions of winning by a pin. Jay
took a 4-0 lead into the third period and came close
late in the match of registering a pin, but settled
for a 13-3 win over Oren Dramen.
Freshman 285-pound
Jose Lopez (John Glenn HS) was
extended to two overtimes before losing a 5-2
decision to Kasey Cowan. During the eight minutes of
regulation, Lopez was the obvious aggressor, but
couldn't take down Cowan, who was content to defend
Lopez all night. After the first overtime, both
wrestlers had recorded an escape, but the break for
Cowan came in the second overtime, when Lopez was
too winded to get off the mat. Lopez then chose to
let Cowan escape in the next overtime and look to
record a takedown for the win, but just could
execute the move he wanted and dropped a 5-2
decision.
Winning for the
Falcons on the night were freshman
Jesse
Ponce (Mesa, AZ HS), who
easily defeated Dustin Harris, 14-7 at 149 pounds,
and 125-pound freshman
Ruben Rios
(Artesia HS), a 5-4 winner. Ponce opened up
a 6-2 lead after the first period and rode Harris
the entire second period before turning up the heat
and even registered a near fall. Rios had a tough
battle with Alex Lopez and fought back from an early
0-2 deficit before a pair of reversals and an escape
turned out to be enough in a 5-4 win.
