The Cerritos
College wrestling team had one individual champion
and two reach the championship match at the Santa
Ana Tournament on Saturday. The end result was a
fourth place team finish, as the Falcons did not
enter any wrestlers in two weight classes. The team
will now travel north to the West Valley Tournament
this Saturday.
Winning at 197
pounds was sophomore
Caleb Gerl
(Calvary Chapel HS), who entered the
tournament as the top-seed. After a first round
bye, Gerl defeated his first three opponents by
either a fall or technical fall before posting a
14-5 win in the finals against Brad Carls of
Bakersfield College. At 285 pounds, freshman
Jose
Lopez (John Glenn HS)
came in as the top seed, but was upset in the
championship match, 8-5, by Austin Garza of Fresno
City College. Last week, Lopez defeated Garza 5-3 in
the finals of the Modesto Tournament. At 149 pounds,
freshman
Jesse
Ponce (Mesa, AZ HS) recorded a
pair of wins before defeating freshman teammate
Dylan Garriott (North Torrance HS)
in the quarterfinals, 8-6. Ponce then defeated East
Los Angeles College's Michael Lopez, 21-9 to advance
to the finals, where he was defeated by top-seeded
Jose Navarro of Santa Ana College, 13-8.
Sophomore
Bronson Gerl (Calvary Chapel HS)
won his first two matches at 157 pounds to advance
to the quarterfinals, but was defeated by top-seed
and eventual champion Ted Bristol of Santa Ana
College by a fall. After he registered a 7-5 win to
reach the third place match, Gerl lost to Clayton
McFarlane of Palomar College by pin and settled for
fourth place. At 133 pounds, sophomore
Ryan Giovenco (North Torrance HS)
reached the quarterfinals as the top seed, but was
defeated by eventual champion Dan Osmer, 6-5 and
then defaulted in the consolation round.
