Competing in their
first action of the season, the Cerritos College
wrestling team finished second at the Mt. San
Antonio Duals. The Falcons, who finished fourth at
the state championship last year and return three
All-Americans, opened with a 34-6 win over Rio Hondo
College. They followed that with a 36-9 victory over
West Hills College and a 36-7 decision over South
Coast Conference opponent East Los Angeles College.
In their final match of the duals, Cerritos fell
behind 14-0 to conference foe Santa Ana College
before dropping a 23-9 decision. The Falcons (3-1)
will now travel to the Modesto Tournament this
Saturday.
In the loss to the
Dons, the first four matches went the way of Santa
Ana before freshman 184-pound
Anthony
Duarte (Fountain Valley HS)
posted a 9-4 decision. Sophomore All-American
Caleb Gerl (Calvary Chapel HS)
followed with a 3-2 decision after receiving a
riding point at 197 pounds, while freshman 285-pound
Jose Lopez (John Glenn HS) saw
his 4-1 first period lead hold up for a 5-1 win. Of
the seven matches Cerritos lost, three were by one
point and another was by two points.
The day opened
with a convincing win over Rio Hondo, with freshman
Alex Razo (La Quinta HS)
posting a pin in 1:07 at 141 pounds, while freshman
Casey
Montoya (J.W. North HS) needed
3:26 to pin his opponent at 165 pounds. The third
pin came at the hands of Duarte at 184 pounds, as he
recorded his win in 2:17. Gerl turned in a
convincing 11-2 win, with Lopez shutting out his
opponent, 5-0 in the 285-pound match. Also posting
wins were sophomore
Matt
Bautista (North Torrance HS),
a 9-3 winner at 125 pounds, sophomore
Andrew Yu
(Cerritos HS), a 3-1 winner at 133 pounds
and freshman
Clayton
Peters (Los Alamitos HS), a
7-5 winner at 151 pounds.
In addition to
Lopez (3:38), freshman
Daniel Walton (Orange Lutheran HS) in
48 seconds and Ryan
Arias (Downey HS), who needed
2:20, all posted pins against West Hills, while
sophomore All-American
Ryan Giovenco (North Torrance HS)
recorded a 12-0 win at 141 pounds. Freshman
James Knerr (North Torrance HS)
posted a 15-0 shutout in his first match of the
season at 174 pounds, with freshman
Ruben Rios
(Artesia HS) winning 8-4 at 133 pounds,
Duarte (7-3 at 184 pounds) and Gerl (7-3 at 197
pounds) all winning.
Cerritos finished
off East LA, as Bautista (23 seconds at 125
pounds) and Giovenco (53 seconds at 141 pounds) both
posted pins, while Gerl picked up a default win at
197 pounds. The team continued to dominate with
Lopez recording an 11-0 win at 285 pounds, while
Duarte won handily, 17-3 at 184 pounds. At 165
pounds, freshman
Nick
Davis (Lassen HS) won 20-11,
while Knerr won 11-3 at 174 pounds and Yu posted a
6-2 win at 133 pounds.
