Although the
Cerritos College wrestling team finished in second
place at the Modesto Tournament on Saturday, they
did come away with three individual champions, along
with three second place finishers. It's the second
straight tournament of the year the team came in
second place. The Falcons will now compete in the
Santa Ana Tournament on Saturday.
Winning in their
respective weight classes were sophomore 131-pound
Ryan Giovenco (North Torrance HS),
freshman 197-pound
Jacob
Eaton (Calvary Chapel HS) and
freshman 285-pound
Jose
Lopez (John Glenn HS). In
fact, at 197 pounds, Eaton was awarded first place
when sophomore All-American teammate
Caleb Gerl
(Calvary Chapel HS) defaulted to him in the
championship match. At 125 pounds, sophomore
Matt
Bautista (North Torrance HS)
place second, as did freshman 165-pound Alfonso
Estrada (Perris HS).
For Giovenco, he
entered as the #1-seed and received a bye in the
first round before pinning his first two opponents.
In the semi-finals, he defeated sophomore teammate
Andy
Yu (Cerritos HS), 3-2 before
posting a 9-1 victory over Jeremy Moreno of Shasta
College in the finals. Eaton defeated Brandon White
of Sacramento City College, 8-0, #2-seeded Lucas
Keene of Fresno City College by pin in 1:35 and then
recorded a 13-7 win over Todd Rucker of Shatsa
College to reach the finals. Gerl, who was seeded
#1, pinned Frank Keach of Modesto College in 3:30
and then recorded a 15-0 win over Kevin Keisler of
Sacramento City to advance to the finals. For Lopez,
he pinned his first three opponents and then
finished off the tournament with a 5-3 win over
top-seeded Austin Garza of Fresno City College.
Bautista, seeded
#3, beat three opponents to reach the finals,
including freshman teammate
Mike
Perez (Firebaugh HS) in the
semi-finals, 12-7. In the championship match,
Bautista was defeated by Galen Williams of Fresno
City College, 13-3. At 165 pounds, Estrada won three
straight matches to reach the finals until a 6-5
loss to Fernando Lucato of Fresno City College.
Also wrestling
well for the Falcons were sophomore
Bronson Gerl (Calvary Chapel HS),
who placed third at 157 pounds, freshman
Alex Razo
(La Quinta HS), who came in fourth place at
141 pounds, freshman
Dylan Garriott (North Torrance HS),
a fourth place finisher at 149 pounds and Yu, who
finished fourth at 131 pounds.
