To
cap off a historic career, Cerritos College wrestler
Jose
Lopez (John Glenn HS), who won
back-to-back state championships at 285 pounds, was
named the California Community College Athletic
Association (CCCAA) December Male Athlete of the Month.
Lopez, who earned a scholarship to continue wrestling at
Dickinson State (ND) University, became just the fourth
wrestler in school history to win consecutive state
championships.
Lopez, who posted a 33-1 record this season, defeated
Fresno City College's Luis Contreras, 4-0 in the state
championship match. Over the course of the season, Lopez
won the Southern California Championship, as well as the
West Hills, Santa Ana and Modesto Tournament
championships. His only setback of the season was a loss
to Levi Cooper of Arizona State University at the Embry
Riddle Tournament...[more]

The Cerritos College wrestling team may not have won the
California Community College Athletic Association State
Wrestling Championship at Victor Valley College on
Saturday night, but they did have two of their wrestlers
win individual state championships. The Falcons, who
finished with 125 team points, trailed only Fresno City
College, who had 185.5 team points, with four wrestlers
winning state championships.
Sophomore 285-pound
Jose Lopez (John Glenn HS) concluded his Falcon career with back-to-back state championships, marking just the fourth time in school history that feat has been accomplished. He joins Ron Kenworthy (1967-69), Antonio McKee (1988-89) and Hossin Oushani (1999-2000) who were two-time state champions. Freshman
Steven Cabanas (Canyon Springs HS) posted a 10-6 win at 125 pounds to win the state championship. The third Cerritos wrestler to reach the finals, freshman
Cody Bollinger (Sultana HS),
dropped a 10-2 decision to Eric Lopez of Victor Valley
College.
Lopez, who finished the season with a 33-1 record,
defeated Luis Contreras of Fresno City College, 4-0 in
the final match of the tournament. It was only a month
ago that Lopez, who will be competing for Dickinson
State (ND) University next season, pinned Contreras in

championship match
It doesn't look as though the Cerritos College wrestling
team will have enough points to overtake Fresno City
College for the team title at the California Community
College Athletic Association Wrestling State
Championships at Victor Valley College. However, the
Falcons do have three wrestlers who will be competing
for individual championships on Saturday night. The Rams
have accumulated 148.5 team points heading into the
championship matches, while the Falcons are a distant

12.10.10 - Falcons in second place
after first day
If the Cerritos
College wrestling team is going to capture their first
state championship since 2002, they are going to have to
overcome a 11.5-point deficit behind Fresno City College
after the first day of the California Community College
Athletic Association Wrestling State Championships at
Victor Valley College. The Falcons, who have six
wrestlers that made it through the first day unscathed,
have compiled 69.5 team points, and will compete in the
semi-finals, also had one of their wrestlers get
eliminated. For the Rams, they still have all 10 of
their wrestlers alive, and have 81 team points...[more]

Back in 2006 and 2007, the Cerritos College wrestling
team won the Southern California Championship, but still
came up short in the state championships. This year, the
Falcons, who won the Southern California Dual Meet
Championship, have followed that by winning the Southern
California Championship on Saturday at Santa Ana
College. The Falcons, who had three individual
champions, compiled 143 team points to easily
outdistance second place Cuesta College, who finished
with 112 team points. The team will now send nine
participants to the California Community College
Athletic Association State Championships, which will
take place at Victor Valley College next Friday and
Saturday.
Winning individual titles for Cerritos were 125-pound
freshman Steven Cabanas (Canyon Springs HS), sophomore 165-pound
Eric Sauvageau (Loara HS) and sophomore 285-pound
Jose Lopez (John Glenn HS), who won the Southern California and state championship last year. As for Sauvageau, he placed fourth in the state championships in 2008.
Also advancing to the championship match were sophomore Tilman Tran (Loara HS), who ended up forfeiting in the finals at 141 pounds and sophomore
Mario Delgado (North Torrance HS) at 197 pounds. Those who will also compete in the state tournament are 149-pound sophomore
Jesse Ponce (Mesa, AZ HS), who came in fifth place, freshman 157-pound
Cody Bollinger (Sultana HS), a fourth place finisher, 174-pound freshman
Thomas Estrada (Perris HS), who came in third place and 184-pound freshman

at invitational
Going up against wrestlers from the university level is
always advantageous as the most important matches of the
season are right around the corner. For the Cerritos
College wrestling team, 12 athletes got a chance to
square off against wrestlers who currently compete at
the four-year level, as the Falcons took part in the
Spokane Open in Washington on Saturday. It was the last
event for Cerritos, who will compete in the Southern
California Championships at Santa Ana College on

11.13.10 - Fresno City defeats
Cerritos for dual state title
After getting close to advancing to the State Dual Meet
Championships the last three years, the Cerritos College
wrestling team finally got there this season after
easily defeating three teams in the Southern California
Championships. But, on Saturday, the Falcons were unable
to defeat host Fresno City College, who posted a 30-12
win. Cerritos (8-1), ranked #2 in the state, had their
chances to win the match, but lost several close matches
that put them too far behind the Rams. Next up for the
team is a trip to Idaho on Saturday for the Northern
Idaho Duals, followed by the Inland Northwest Open the

conference undefeated
The Cerritos College wrestling team completed the
first-ever Southwest Conference on Wednesday night with
a 27-18 win at Mt. San Antonio College to finished
undefeated. The Falcons, who will travel to Fresno City
College on Saturday for the State Dual Meet
Championship, are now 8-0 overall and 4-0 in conference

against four-year competition
As the lone community college school to compete in the
Embry-Riddle Tournament on Saturday, the Cerritos
College wrestling team did well, as they had one third
place, two fourth place and two fifth place finishes.
The team will now complete their Southwest Conference
schedule on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. when they travel to

conference win
The Cerritos College wrestling team improved their
season record to 7-0, while they are now 3-0 after their
35-12 win over Rio Hondo College in a Southwest
Conference match Wednesday night at North Torrance High
School. The Falcons, who are ranked #2 in the
state, will now drive to Prescott, AZ for the Embry

10.27.10 - Cerritos comes back to
defeat Santa Ana
After the first four matches of the Southwest Conference
match on Wednesday night, the Cerritos College wrestling
team was trailing rival Santa Ana College, 12-3.
However, the Falcons (6-0, 2-0) went on to win the final
six matches of the night to come away with a 26-12
victory. The team will now face Rio Hondo College in
another conference match next Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. at
North Torrance High School. The match will be a home
game for Cerritos, who is unable to use their gym while

10.20.10 - Falcons open conference
with win
Fresh off winning the Southern California Dual Team
Championship at Palomar College on Saturday, the
Cerritos College wrestling team returned four days later
to face the Comets in their Southwest Conference
opener on Wednesday night. The Falcons, ranked #2 in the
state, won five of the final six weights to post a 30-11
win over the Comets to improve their overall record to
5-0 and are now 1-0 in the SCC. The team will now travel
to Santa Ana College next Wednesday for another

10.16.10 - Cerritos wins Southern
California Team Dual Championship
After four straight years of reaching the Southern
California Dual Meet Team Championship match, only to
finish in second place, the Cerritos College wrestling
team finally won the championship match on Saturday at
Palomar College. The Falcons, who were the top-seeded
team in the dual meet tournament, powered through three
opponents to claim the championship. They opened with a
36-9 win over Bakersfield College, followed by a 34-6
win over Santa Ana College in the semi-finals. In the
finals, they handled West Hills College, 39-1. In three
of the four years that Cerritos lost in the finals,
their opponent was Santa Ana College. This Wednesday,
the team will travel back to Palomar College for the
start of the South Coast Conference season...[more]

Fresno City
In their first three tournaments of the season, the
Cerritos College wrestling team has finished in second
place in all three, with the Modesto Tournament on
Saturday being the third. In fact, in all three, Fresno
City College has won the championship, with the Falcons
a distant second place. However, at the Modesto
Tournament, Cerritos closed the gap considerably, as
they finished with 189 team points and four individual
champions, while the Rams had 198.5 team points and
three individual champions. The team will now enter the
South Regional Duals at Palomar on Saturday...[more]

The Cerritos College wrestling team had three individual
champions at the Santa Ana Tournament on Saturday,
which helped them compile 124.5 team points and come in
second place. The team will now take their two second
place tournament finishes and travel to Modesto

09.25.10 - Cerritos takes second place
at West Hills Tournament
The Cerritos College wrestling team entered 31
competitors at the West Hills Tournament over the
weekend and saw 10 of them finish in the top four of the
various weight classifications. The top team they
entered finished with 132.5 team points, which was good
enough for second place, as Fresno City College won the
tournament with 155.5 team points. Each team is only
allowed to enter one person per weight class, so several
schools had as many as five "teams" in the tournament.
Cerritos will now compete in the Santa Ana Tournament on

09.18.10 - Opening tournament
shortened due to tragedy
The Cerritos College wrestling team was in the early
stages of their 2010 season opener when tragedy hit at
the Mt. San Antonio Duals. The Falcons, who opened with
a 33-9 win over East Los Angeles College on Saturday,
were forced to end their day when Rio Hondo College
wrestler Jesus Cruz collapsed during his match. He was
treated by the Mt. San Antonio athletic training staff
and EMTs before being transmitted to the hospital, where
he was pronounced dead. The tournament director and Mt.
San Antonio officials decided to end the tournament due
to the tragedy...[more]
