GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Two new areas of study at Cerritos College are the Fitness Specialist and Athletic Trainer Aide Certificate Programs.  Woman using weight machineThese Certificates are interrelated and will appeal to students interested
in fitness, athletics and/or sports injuries.  They are designed to be completed in two semesters for students who attend full time and may lead to immediate employment opportunities.  Students may also successfully prepare for several national certifications in fitness, strength and conditioning, and athletic training.  Each program will also provide students with transfer options in various areas of study.

WHAT IS AN ATHLETIC TRAINER AIDE?
The Athletic Trainer Aide functions as an aide in a clinical setting; or in a high school, college or professional athletic training center.  The Aide will assist the Certified Athletic Trainer or other healthcare professionals in the prevention, care, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. This will include assisting in the assessment and documentation of athletic injuries, acute and chronic injury management, treatment protocols, principles of conditioning, and return to competitive activity.  In addition, effective communications skills with athletes/patients as well as medical professionals are required.

WHAT IS A FITNESS SPECIALIST?
A Fitness Specialist understands the components of fitness, has a basic understanding of human physiology, anatomy and human movement; as well as a basic understanding of how food affects an individual's performance and health. Effective communication of realistic health and fitness goalsMan Stretching as well as providing motivation and encouragement to the client are essential for this specialty.  A Fitness Specialist assists individuals with achieving their goals, living healthier lives and does not give advice beyond their scope of practice. "The hallmark of Ace certified Personal Trainers is their ability to work safely and effectively in promoting better health through physical activity for a wide variety of individuals" (Personal Trainer Manual by American Council on Exercise, 1997).

COMPLETING EITHER OF THESE CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS COULD LEAD TO THE FOLLOWING CAREER OPPORTUNITIES:

Aerobics Instructor/Group Exercise Leader, Personal Trainer, Athletic Trainer Aide, Physical Therapist Aide, Wellness Consultant, Fitness Coach, Recreational Leader

CERTIFICATIONS
Completion of the programs will partially prepare students for the following certification exams: the American Council on Exercise (ACE), the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA), the National Athletic Trainers Association Certification Examination (ATC), as a National Strength & Conditioning Association Certified Personal Trainer (NSCA-CPT) and as a
Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS).

Students who complete these programs may be interested in the following transfer areas:  kinesiology, exercise science, physical education, health & wellness, preventive medicine, pre-medicine, pre-physical therapy, pre-chiropractic, massage therapy, emergency medical technician training.
