Safety:  In the organic chemistry laboratory safety comes first. It is the issue to be covered first and foremost.

Safety quizzes:

Two Safety Quizzes will be given on the date indicated in the laboratory schedule. You will prepare for these quizzes by reading the packet, Safety in the Chemistry Laboratory and Organic Safety. You must get a satisfactory score on each safety quiz, which may be done by scoring at least 90%.  If you do not receive a satisfactory score on either Safety quiz, you will be allowed to retake the quiz once, at a place and time arranged by your instructor. If you do not get a satisfactory score when you

retake the quiz you will receive an F grade for the laboratory portion of the course. If you choose not to drop the class but to remain, knowing that the lab grade and therefore the course grade will be an F, you will NOT be allowed to do any experiments.

Materials Needed:

1) Textbook: Microscale Techniques for the Organic Laboratory, Dana W. Mayo, Ronald M. Pike, Peter K. Trumper;   2nd Ed.,John Wiley & Sons.

2) Packet, Safety in the Chemistry Laboratory. This material can be downloaded and printed from my webpage listed above.

3) Scan-tron #882 for the Safety Quiz

4) SAFETY GOGGLES which have splash protection in compliance with ANSI Z87.1-1989 as required by California State law.

5) A scientific calculator . Calculators in combination with electronic communication devices are not allowed.

6) Lab apron/coat

7) Report notebook (with duplicate pages)

8) Metric ruler

9) "Sharpie" permanent marker (black, blue or red)

Grade Composition

The total laboratory grade will be composed of the following components:

a) Quiz:

Pre-laboratory quizzes/report checks 5 points each

Lab quizzes, 10-40 points each.. (One, except for the 40 point quiz, is dropped)

b) Report:

Lab reports 10-30 points each  (One lab is dropped)

Grade is based on :  Quality of report, organization, content of writing  Results, Unknowns, Technique, Products  Cleanliness, promptness, attitude, safety.  Your lab report will be initialed by the instructor so you must attend the lab in order to receive credit.

Lab reports will not be accepted more than 2 lab periods late.  The grade will reduced 20% per lab period that it is late.  If you fail to complete and turn in more than two lab reports your Chem. 211 grade will be no higher than a D. A lab will be considered late if it is not turned in stapled at the beginning of class.

Total Grade For LABORATORY ----------35% of Chem. 211

Note: In order to receive a passing score, you must receive a passing grade in both the lecture and the laboratory, and also on the final examination.

"Fatherly Advice"

PREPARATION is the key to doing well and having a pleasant experience in the organic chemistry laboratory. To prepare for the experiments, you should:

a)     Read the experiment and try to understand it as much as possible,

b)    Write up a PRE-LABORATORY PROTOCOL

I want you to succeed!  If you foresee a problem talk to me before it gets out of your control.

Have a safe & fun semester!
