Drawing upon the work of a number of years and from a variety of venues – the English Department SLO committee, the Carnegie Faculty Inquiry Group, and independent effort – a group of Department faculty conceived these learning outcomes as the prototype for each of the courses listed below. They will be listed on the respective course outlines of record and presented to the Curriculum Committee for approval. At essence, these Student Learning Outcomes represent generally what students should learn in each of the classes, respectively, and they should be included in each syllabus. How these outcomes are measured can be determined by a rubric, using the variations on the criteria of emergent, proficient, and advanced. English 15 A. English 240, Creative Writing A. Demonstrate critical thinking skills by analyzing and evaluating the work of other students, published work, and the student’s own work B. Recognize the distinguishing features of each of the three genres, short fiction, poetry, and drama C. Create original works in at least one of the genres D. Demonstrate understanding of the market by preparing work for submission to a publication or production house |
