Welcome to English 100, Freshman Composition

What I've tried to do with this course is to break it up into do-able, weekly units, each unit asking of you roughly the same amount of time and effort.  If you keep up with the work assigned each week, you should be able to complete the course successfully.

There are three parts to this orientation.  To confirm your enrollment in the course, you need to complete all three.

  • A brief description of the course - for a full description, check the Syllabus.  For a look at the weekly assignments, check the Sequence of Assignments
  • A technological orientation - you must complete the orientation to confirm your enrollment in the course.
  • Enrollment in Turnitin.com

The course

  • Weekly Assignments
    • Readings from the text
    • Readings of posted discussions
    • Weekly Writings:  written responses to what you’ve read from the text, to be submitted to Turnitin.com each Thursday.
  • One novel – to be read during the second half of the course
    • The Kite Runner, Khaled Hosseini
  • Two essays, each about 750-1000 words long – to be submitted to Turnitin.com
    • Narrative/Story
    • Response to the novel
  • Four essay components of the Research Paper, each 750-1000 words long
    • Prospectus
    • Position Paper
    • Causal Analysis
    • Refutation
  • Final Project/Research Paper, 2250 to 3000 words long, which is made up of the four previous papers

Technical Orientation – due by Monday, 24 August

Only those enrolled in the course:  First, read through this orientation.  Then complete the Cerritos College online orientation, which will automatically send me a certificate of completion via email in order to confirm your enrollment in the class.  If  the certificate of completion doesn't reach me by Monday, 24 August, I will have to assume you've chosen to drop the course, and I will give your place in the class to someone from the waiting list.

Step 1:

Click here to complete the Orientation.

Step 2:

Click here to take the Orientation Quiz and send the Certificate of Completion.

Those trying to add this course:  By midday Tuesday, 25 August, you should know whether or not a spot has opened for you.  If one hasn't by that time, it means the class is closed and you won't be able to add.  Should this happen to you, please consider taking the course during the next semester:
