Course
Description:
This course is an introduction to the fundamentals and principles which
underlie effective speech communication.
Practical experience, emphasizing content, organization and delivery, will
be required in at least three oral presentations, specifically including
persuasive/ informative speaking.
Prerequisites:
Satisfactory completion of the English
Placement Process or ENGL 52
or equivalent or SPCH 60 or
equivalent with a grade of ‘C’ or higher.
Course
Goals:
This
course is designed . . .
1. to
overview theory and research on human communication,
2. to
help students understand their implicit theories of interpersonal
communication and how they affect
their communication,
3. to
enhance student’s public speaking abilities,
4. to
enhance student’s ability to work effectively in groups,
5. to
achieve a greater understanding of various factors which influence public
communication
including speaker-audience analysis, research and evidence,
organization, language, evidence, and
delivery,
6. to
create critical consumers of public communication,
7. to facilitate an understanding of the function of public speaking in society,
8. to
provide the opportunity for participants to improve their interpersonal
communication and public speaking skills.
Experiential
Learning:
This
is a skills-based, experiential course. Experiential
learning requires active participation in the class.
To a large extent, you will get out of the class what you put into it.
