At the base of the Sun model is a diagram representing the Copernican solar system. May 24, 1543 was the publication date for Copernicus' "On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres". It seems that the planets are arranged in the configuration they had on that date. An un-necessary concession to astrology, in my opinion.
