The Griffith Observatory and Planetarium  has instructed and entertained millions of visitors since its opening in 1935.  The center dome in the photograph above contains the planetarium, the dome on the left houses a 12 inch refracting telescope, and the dome on the right has a heliostat/spectrometer which projects the sun's image and spectrum for public viewing.  The observatory is currently (May, 2002) undergoing extensive renovation, and will not open again until 2005.  I was there on the last weekend in April when the grounds were still open, although the building itself was already closed.  However, the grounds, too, will close at the beginning of Summer 2002, so what you see here are some of the last views available to the public before the area becomes completely off limits for three years.

This last weekend of April was fantastic.  It had rained a couple of days before and the skies over Los Angeles were swept clear of smog.  Downtown LA stood sharply etched against the sky, making it a fine target for the "scenic overlook" telescope.  The citizens of Southern California clearly love this place, and most are pleased that the new facilities will be largely underground, so that future visitors will see the same graceful exterior that has greeted and inspired past generations.
