Gruene
| Gruene
(pronounced "green") is a pleasant old village on the
outskirts of New Braunfels, between San Antonio and Austin.
Settled by German immigrants after the Civil War, it was sufficiently
isolated in the middle of the twentieth century to be bypassed by
not-too-distant urban sprawl. Today its Texas brand of
"quaintness" has been turned into a tourist destination with
shops and upscale restaurants.

Houston
| Houston is
not the most photogenic of cities. However, there is an abundance
of modern architecture which can be quite striking. The pictures
below are of the chapel of St. Basil on the campus of St. Thomas
University. Adjacent to the campus is the internationally renowned
ecumenical Rothko Peace Chapel and a modern Byzantine Chapel housing superb
frescos from a Greek Orthodox church in Cypress. Neither
museum allows photography, but their architectural styles blend
harmoniously with the chapel shown here.
