PEP UNIT

I.                    Catalog description

A.                Course description

This course is designed to develop, improve and implement the skills necessary to be an effective cheerleader at the Community College level.  This course may be taken for a maximum of 8 units.  (Formerly PE 92)

B.                 Class hours:  6 lab activity

C.                Prerequisite:  Acceptance on the Pep Squad through Spring try-outs

Corequisite:   None

Appropriate attire and uniform, including equipment as designated by Student Activities and the instructor

 III.               Course content

A.                Demonstration and performance of the fundamental skills for stunting and cheerleading to create routines, cheers, chants, and sideline performances

B.                 Creation of cheers suitable to outdoor and indoor events

C.                Techniques of controlling and encouraging enthusiasm of large groups of spectators at college events

D.                Correct stunting, arm and strength techniques

E.                 Practice with and know the college band music well enough to perform routines along with the band

F.                 Participation in college events including, but not limited to, pre-game rallies and half-time shows

 IV.              Course objectives

A.                Developing the skills and techniques required to create cheer and yell routines

B.                 Developing techniques of controlling and instilling enthusiasm into large groups at college events

C.                Creating routines and utilizing skills to be integrated with the college band game program

D.                Demonstrating methods of instilling teamwork

E.                 Designing routines and skills to be performed at pep rallies 

F.                 Producing routines to be performed at competition between other community colleges

A.                Reading

1.                  Read two articles on leadership

2.                  Read the school’s guidelines on conduct and discipline

3.                  Read the rules as established by the Pep Squad Coordinator

B.                 Writing

1.                  Maintain a notebook on cheers and their coordinating movements

2.                  Maintain a notebook on stunts and how they progressively build and work successfully

3.                  Maintain a record of attendance, hours of rallies, games, and special events

C.                Critical thinking

1.                  Describing and demonstrating methods of leading and directing pre-game and half-time activities

2.                  Determining acceptable stunts and yells

3.                  Analyzing errors in performance and explaining how to correct them

JUSTIFICATION STATEMENT

 This course will be most valuable to students who desire to either enhance their current cheerleading and stunting skills, or to learn appropriate skills in strength, flexibility, chanting and crowd performances

MULTICULTURAL/DIVERSITY STATEMENT

The historical background of athletic events provides a perfect opportunity for discussion and understanding of diverse cultures.  In addition, consideration will be given to different cultural backgrounds, values and beliefs as pertaining to the physical activity involved with cheerleading
