Wanted: U.S. Runners for 2003 World Masters 100K Race

August 26, 2003

Do you want to compete in the 2003 World Masters Athletics (WMA) World Championship 100K? If you are a US masters-age ultrarunner who is interested in competing in the 2003 WMA 100K World Championship, USATF's Mountain, Ultra, and Trail (MUT) Running Council wants you to know about this rare opportunity. MUT encourages American masters ultrarunners to compete for world age-group recognition at this venue and to provide a US masters presence at this world championship. Not since 1998 has there been a 100K world competition for masters.

The 2003 IAU (International Association of Ultrarunners) World Championship 100K Under the Patronage of IAAF (International Armature Athletics Federation) in Tainan, Taiwan is November 16, 2003. The US National 100K Team will compete against the 100K runners from around the world. This race includes a race for individual masters age-group runners. All masters, who enter the race automatically race in the WMA 100K World Championship, a race that is a separate event run at the same time and location. For this event men’s 5-year age-groups start at age 40 and women’s start at age 35. US Masters ultrarunners interested in participating in the WMA 100K race may be able to travel and lodge with the US 100K National Team at their own expense.

Soliciting Sponsorship - Because USATF is unable to support masters ultrarunners participating in the 2003 WMA World Championship 100K, MUT encourages interested masters ultrarunners to investigate other funding sources. Without sponsorship, masters ultrarunners competing in the race must fund their trip to the WMA 100K World Championship. Sponsorship could assist participating masters with entry fees, uniforms, travel, and lodging. If you are able to providing funding for US masters ultrarunners at the 2003 WMA World Championship 100K or know someone who can, contact the MUT representatives listed in this announcement.
