The MUT Council selected these ultra distance championship races at the 24th annual USATF Conference in Kansas City, MO on December 7, 2002. In selecting national ultra championships, the MUT Council balances the quality of the event with the championship race experience it provides. Bids were analyzed on the following criteria:

  • The race offers a quality venue, runner support, and can attract and accommodate a depth of field.

  • The race does not conflict with other national ultra championships or the 100K World Challenge.

  • The race offers incentives to the competitive athlete such as accommodations or waived entry.

  • The race offers prize money.

  • The race offers open entry

Vail HillClimb Mountain Championship

Peter De La Cerda of Alamosa, Colo., and Anita Ortiz of Eagle, Colo., won the inaugural USA Moutnain Running Championships on July 6. The race was held in conjunction with the 25th annual Vail HillClimb, a 7.5-mile race up the dirt roads to the top of Vail Mountain.

De La Cerda, 31, a former USA half-marathon champion on the roads, ran away from training partner Simon Gutierrez, 37, to win the race in 47:42. With the victory, De La Cerda earned an automatic berth on the Teva US Mountain Running Team that will compete in the World Mountain Running Trophy race in Alaska in September. De La Cerda is training to make the US Olympic marathon team in 2004. He and Gutierrez set a fast early pace, clocking a 4:45 on the flat and fast first mile of the course.

The women's race was not an automatic qualifier, but Ortiz, 11th at the 2002 WMRT race in Austria, showed she's still one of the top mountain runners in the US Ortiz ran away from Kelly Ryan, 34, of Littleton, Colo., with about a mile to go to seal the victory in 1:01:19. Ortiz was the 2002 US Snowshoeing champion.

The race also served as a USATF Masters Mountain Running National Championship. Scott Creel, 41, of Bozeman, Mont., (10th place) and Cindy O'Neill, 41, of Manitou Springs, Colo., (3rd place) were the top Masters runners. Complete results are available at www.vailrec.com.

Olander Park 100 Mile Run Results

The USA 100-Mile Road Championships were held in Sylvania, Ohio at Olander Park on a ~1-mi loop on 14 September at 10:00 am (mid-80's Fahrenheit). This was the first 100-mile USATF road championship for over a decade. Prize money distribution for men and women was as follows: 1st - $500, 2nd - $300, 3rd - $200, 4th - $175, 5th - $150.

Forty-two year old Tim Clement of Solon, Ohio ran 14:01:01 to win. Connie Gardner's winning time of 16:22:15 is a USA championship record, surpassing the 16:41:26 of Christine Gibbons from 1989. Her winning margin was one of the largest in championship history, as she finished more than 7 miles clear of runner-up Janet Runyan of Boulder, Colorado. Unheralded Lynda Hendricks-Dana of Tuscon, Arizona, took the bronze. Gardner (39) of Medina, Ohio, the 2002 USA 100km champion, ran unchallenged wire-to-wire. Complete results can be found at: www.americanultra.org/olander/olanderframeset.htm. Results of the USATF race follow.

100K World Challenge - The Mountain/Ultra/Trail (MUT) Council of USA Track & Field selected the USA 100Km Team to compete in the 2003 IAU 100km World Cup to be held November 16 in Tainan County, Taiwan. The United States has enjoyed good success at the World 100K event, highlighted by the World and American records set in 1995, at Winschoten, The Netherlands.  Bronze medalist Tom Johnson's 6:30:11 American Record for the distance still stands today.  Gold medalist Ann Trason set a then standing World mark of 7:00:48 in leading the USA women to a World Record Team effort (22:28:20).

In 2000, Dan Held placed fourth in 6:33 in leading the USA men to a second place silver medal, while the USA women captured the 3rd place bronze.  In 2001 Rich Hanna surprised the World by racing to a second place silver in Cleder, France. Over the last decade, American teams have garnered a total of eight team medals and three individual medalists.

WMA 100K World Championships – MUT solicited for masters runners to form a team for the 2003 IAU (International Association of Ultrarunners) World Championship 100K Under the Patronage of IAAF (International Armature Athletics Federation) in Tainan, Taiwan is November 16, 2003. Nine runners responded with interest to the recruitment and Chuck DesJardins became the team leader. In this event, the US National 100K Team will compete against the 100K runners from around the world this event and for the first time since 1998 this race includes a race for individual masters age-group runners. All masters, who enter the race automatically race in the WMA 100K World Championship, a race that is a separate event run at the same time and location. For this event men’s 5-year age-groups start at age 40 and women’s start at age 35. US Masters ultrarunners interested in participating in the WMA 100K race may be able to travel and lodge with the US 100K National Team at their own expense.

USATF is unable to support masters ultrarunners participating in the 2003 WMA World Championship 100K, MUT encouraged interested masters ultrarunners to investigate other funding sources. Without sponsorship, masters ultrarunners competing in the race must fund their trip to the WMA 100K World Championship. Sponsorship could assist participating masters with entry fees, uniforms, travel, and lodging. The team has not been announced.

24-Hour World Championships – A US team will race in the 24-hour World Challenge held in Uden, Netherlands on October 11-12. The team is organized by the American Ultra Association and funded through sponsorships they obtained from Natural Ovens Bakery and Wigwam/ULTIMAX Socks who are supplying product, travel, and uniforms.

Three American men and three American women compose the American team.  Five of the six team members are Masters athletes.  The men include Masters John Geesler of NY, Roy Pirrung of WI, and open member Scott Eppelmann of TX.  The women are: Sandy Powell of VA, Pam Reed of AZ, and Sue Olsen of MN.  Each member is bringing one crew member at their own expense.

The team will meet in Amsterdam on October 9th and travel as a team to Oss, then by bus to the host city of Uden.  A team doctor was selected and funded by the team.  Dr. Andy Lovy will meet the team in Amsterdam and has been advising them on medical issues via emails.

2003 WMRA World Mountain Running Trophy

Suzy West will be competing for the US in the WMRA Masters Mtn. Running Championships September 27-28 in Germany. Suzy is a four-time member (1999 through 2002) of the US mountain Running Team.

Masters Bernie Boettcher, Tom Borschel, and Teva US mountain team junior manager Jeff Adams, will run the open race at the Worlds this year. Kari DiStefano, 44, is the only masters on the Teva US Mountain Running Team this year (her 3rd worlds team) and is also the 2002 USATF Masters Mountain Runner of the Year.

The World Mountain Running Trophy is sanctioned by the World Mountain Running Association (WMRA), the International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF), and USA Track & Field (the national governing body in the USA for track & field, long distance running and race walking). . 2003 was the first time the WMRT was held in the US and only the second time the event was held outside of Europe.

The Teva US Mountain Running Team had one of its best showings at the World Mountain Running Trophy (WMRT) on September 21-22 on Mt. Alyeska near Girdwood, AK. Both the US men’s and women’s teams turned in strong eighth-place finishes in the team standings, while several individuals shined in the IAAF-sanctioned world championship event that was plagued by a freak snow shower.

Highlighting the weekend was the eighth-place individual finish from 39-year old Anita Ortiz (Eagle, CO) amid a snowstorm in the senior women’s 7.7K race up and down 2,231-foot Mt. Alyeska on Saturday. The 2003 USA Mountain Running champion, finished the course in 42:33, more than a minute ahead of the course-record time she set on the same course on August 9th. Ortiz, the 2002 women’s USATF Mountain Runner of the Year, became the first US woman to crack the top 10 in a WMRT race and helped the U. women to their best ever finish (eighth) in the WMRT. Nikki Kimball of Elizabethtown, NY, ran a strong race and finished 24th in 44:04, while Kelli Lusk (Amherst, MA) rounded out the scoring in 39th place in 46:05. Masters runner Kari DiStefano (Telluride, CO) was the final member of the US team, placing 48th in 49:04.

On the men’s side, Paul Low of Amherst, MA, was the top American runner in the senior men’s 11.5K race for the second year in a row. Low was the 2002 men’s USATF Mountain Runner of the Year.

Bill Raitter of Estes Park, CO (29th, 55:49) also ran strong for the US team, as did Eric Morse of Berlin, VT (60th, 58:26). Peter De La Cerda (61st, 58:31), and Simon Gutierrez (79th, 1:02:01), both of Alamosa, CO, started strong but struggled with leg cramps and slippery footing after the initial climb. Scott Gall of Waterloo, IA (78th, 1:01:58) also competed for the US team.

In Saturday’s 4.2K junior women’s race Maggie McManigal (Colorado Springs, CO), Jessica Pitzer (Nederland, CO) and Erika Ross (Colorado Springs, CO) were the top US runners, finishing 30th, 32nd and 33rd, respectively. Andrew Payton (Woodland Park, Colo., 35th place), Eduardo Pasko (Colorado Springs, CO, 38th), Rory Egelus (Anchorage, AK, 40th) and Brett Wilson (Loveland, CO, 47th place) competed in the 7.7K men's junior race for the US.

Of the outstanding US performance USATF MUT Chair Nancy Hobbs says, "It has been a delight to watch our women's team mature since our first trophy in 1995 where we finished at the bottom of the team standings to consistent top ten finishes including our solid eight place this year."

The 2003 Teva US Mountain Running Team was chosen through a series of selection races and by the USA Track & Field MUTl Running Council. Sponsors of this year's team include Teva and SpecialOps Nutrition. Visit www.wmrt2003.org for complete results and more information about the WMRT.

MUT Runners and Contributors of the Year

For their outstanding performances in 2002 in the sport of ultradistance running, MUT selected the following athletes as the men’s and women’s ultrarunners of the year in open and master’s categories. These athletes were presented awards at the Hyatt Regency in Kansas City, Missouri during the breakfast awards banquet at the USATF Annual Convention on Saturday, December 7, 2002.

Chad Ricklefs - (35, CO) Ricklefs is the 2002 USATF 100K National Road Champion taking the title at the Edmund Fitzgerald 100K in October. He also won the JFK 50 Mile, America’s largest ultra race, late in November 2001. Ricklefs showed his speed and versatility by setting a course record at the high-altitude Leadville Trail 100-mile race in Colorado in August. For these outstanding performances, Ricklefs is awarded the Ted Corbitt Award.

Ann Heaslett - (38, WI) Heaslett wass selected for the Ruth Anderson Award for earning two National Championship titles in 2002 at the White River 50 Mile Trail Championship and the Olander Park 24-Hour Championship. She contributed to a team medal at the 100K World Cup, and delivering other fine performances at a variety of distances and terrain.

Roy Pirrung (54, WI)For his consistent 1st place finishes in the 50 to 54 age-group at three USATF Ultra Championships in the 2002 qualifying period and his first place age-group titles at other significant ultraraces, Pirrung was selected as the Men’s Master’s Ultrarunner of the Year.

Ann Trason – (41, CA) Trason, a seven-time winner of the USATF Ultrarunner of the Year Award completed another truly outstanding year of racing ultra distances in 2002. Trason’s six course records at distances from 50K to 100 miles demonstrate that her tremendous talent continues as she competes as a master’s runner as she consistently wins overall.

Considered for their World and American Record performances in the master’s age-group category 75 to 79 were Californians Helen Klein and Ray Piva. In the year 2002, 79-year old Klein ran a 50K World Record and a 50-mile American Record among her seven other ultraraces. Seventy-six-year old Piva set a World and American Record at 100 miles (23:01:56) within his World Record 24-Hour performance of 102.5 miles at the USATF 24-Hour National Championship in Ohio in September. Piva also claimed a World and American Record at 12 hours, 50K, 50 miles, and 100K.

MUT members vote on the ultrarunners of the year from a list of nominees who have run exemplary performances at USATF National Ultra Championships, World Challenge 100K, and other significant races. MUT members are appointed by USATF Men's, Women's, and Master's Long Distance Running Committee Chairs since the group was established in 1998 to assist USA Track and Field with the sports of mountain, ultra, and trail running.

For the first time masters athletes were honored in the mountain running discipline and open athletes received the Mountian Runner of the Year award for the 4th time. The 2002 USATF Mountain Runner of the Year award recipients in the open category are Paul Low, Amherst, MA and Anita Ortiz, Eagle, CO and Craig Fram, Plaistow, NH and Kari DiStefano, Telluride, CO in the masters category. These runners were selected by MUT for their top results in US mountain/trail competitions and international competitions during 2002, current USATF membership, and for serving as an ambassador for the sport.

Paul Low, 28, Amherst, MA was a member of the Teva US Mountain Running Team earning his spot on the team with a second-place finish at the Vail Hill Climb (Central regional selection race) and a fourth-place finish at the Mt Washington Hill Climb (East regional selection race). Low was the top US finisher at international events including the World Mountain Running Trophy in Innsbruck, Austria (32nd overall), the WMRA Grand Prix race in Susa, Italy, and Sierre-Zinal Mountain Race in Sierre, Switzerland. Additional top finishes in 2002 included a win at Colorado's Barr Trail Mountain Race, a course record-win at the 7-Sisters Mountain Race in Massachusetts, third place at Pack Monadnock (third race in the USATF New England mountain circuit), and fourth place in the USATF New England 10K Championships (30:41). Low was also a US team member in 1999 and 2000 (second and fifth US finisher respectively). Low was born and raised in Mount Pleasant, Michigan where he graduated from Central Michigan University in 1999 with a B.S. in Biology and Geology. He is a graduate student at UMass Amherst in Geoscience studying igneous petrology and tectonics and represents the Central Massachusetts Striders.

Anita Ortiz, 38, Eagle, CO was virtually unbeatable in the mountains in 2002. Ortiz traveled to all three of the mountain running team selection races winning both the Vail Hill Climb and Wolverine Hill Climb and finishing second at Mount Washington (first US finisher) to earn her spot on the Teva US Mountain Running Team. Her exceptional 11th place finish at the World Mountain Running Trophy was the best finish by a US woman since 1995, the first year the US sent a women's team to the Worlds. Ortiz was the North American Snowshoe Champion and US National Snowshoe Champion in 2002. She is a graduate of Colorado State University and received her Master in Education at Florida State with an impressive 4.0 average. Ortiz teaches kindergarten at Eagle Valley Elementary and has four children all under the age of 10.

Craig Fram, 44, Plaistow, NH , is among the top master runners in the country on the track, on the road, and in the mountains. In 2002 Fram won the masters divisions at Mount Washington (third overall), and at the Wachusett Mountain Race (second overall) with a time ranking as the third fastest ever run at Wachusett. Fram's overall victory at Pack Monadnock, the third USATF NE Mountain circuit race, was exceptional as he beat 2002 Teva US Mountain Running Team members Paul Low, Richard Bolt, Eric Morse, and Dave Dunham. Fram was a member of the 1995 US Mountain Running Team, but declined a berth on the 2002 Teva US Mountain Running Team due to work-related travel commitments. He may try for a spot on the 2003 Teva US Mountain Running Team. "I like to run 2 or 3 of the USATF NE circuit races," noted Fram, "They make a nice switch from road racing and can be an extreme challenge." Presently Fram has his sites set on bettering the 5,000 meter indoor track record and his own US record for 3,000 meters (8:32.5). Fram is the Managing Director of Product Development for Puma.

Kari DiStefano, 43, Telluride, CO, 2001’s USATF Mountain Runner of the Year, earned a spot on the Teva US Mountain Running Team after her second-place finish at the Vail Hill Climb and was the third US finisher at the World Mountain Running Trophy. The week after the Trophy Race DiStefano earned a silver medal in the 40-44 year age division at the second annual WMRA World Masters Mountain Running Championships shaving more than one minute off her finish time from the week before (same course). DiStefano was victorious in the inaugural running of the Telluride 360 Hill Climb edging out former US Mountain Running Team members Lisa Goldsmith (1997) and Rene Frazee (2000). Equally impressive on the roads, Distefano set the course record in the hilly Rim Rock 37KM in November2001 with a time of 2:28:07. DiStefano has three children and works as a mapper for San Miguel County.

MUT Runner Recognition

Ultra-distance running star Roy Pirrung of Sheboygan, WI celebrated his 55th by setting three new American age-group records this July 12th and 13th at the Sri Chimnoy 48-/24-Hour Self-Transcendence Race, in Köln, Germany including 12-hour (77.75 mi/125,134 km), 24-hour (137.69 mi/221.605 km) and 100-mile (16:10:20) records.
