Mountain and Trail Running Update

May 12, 2003

The following is the first in a series of race updates I will send out as we
progress thru the 2003 mountain & trail racing calendar.  My intention is
two-fold; to keep the USATF-NE Board of Governors informed about notable
performances by our top regional athletes and to inform members of the USATF
National MUT Council as they will be voting to select members of the 2003
Teva US Mountain Running Team.  Please note that this race report is not
intended to be a complete accounting of all worthy mountain & trail races or
athletes across the country.  I will do my best to track athletes trying to
make the 2003 Mountain Team (names in bold).

May 3, 2003 - Merrimack River Trail Race - Andover, MA - 10 miles - 800' of
climb and descend
2002 USATF Mountain Runner of the Year Paul Low wins the men's race followed
closely by Ben Nephew.  Nikki Kimball won the women's race, 3 1/2 minutes
ahead of 2003 National Snowshoe Champion Kelli Lusk.

May 4, 2003 - 7 Sisters Trail Race - Amherst, MA - 12 miles - 3700' of climb
and descend
Paul Low wins for the second day in a row, 7 1/2 minutes ahead of Ben
Nephew.  Finishing 5th overall, Nikki Kimball was the women's winner, 11
minutes ahead of Kelli Lusk.

May 10, 2003 - Prospect Mountain Uphill Race - Lake George, NY - 5.6 miles -
1601' of climb
This was the first time in several years that members of the Teva US
Mountain Running Team have attended this race.  Prospect Mountain is a fast
mountain road race with shallow & medium grades broken up by several flat
sections.  This course lacks the steep pitches found on most mountain road
courses in New England.  2001 USATF Mountain Runner of the Year Eric Morse
won the race but fell 24 seconds short of breaking the course record.
Richard Bolt finished in 2nd place, 1 minute behind Eric and 1 minute ahead
of 3rd place Dave Dunham.  Nikki Kimball won the women's race and finished
6th overall.
