The MUT Council selected these ultra distance championship races at the 24th annual USATF Conference in Kansas City, MO on December 7, 2002. In selecting national ultra championships, the MUT Council balances the quality of the event with the championship race experience it provides. Bids were analyzed on the following criteria:

  • The race offers a quality venue, runner support, and can attract and accommodate a depth of field.

  • The race does not conflict with other national ultra championships or the 100K World Challenge.

  • The race offers incentives to the competitive athlete such as accommodations or waived entry.

  • The race offers prize money.

  • The race offers open entry

Participate in Championships - Ultrarunners of all ages are encouraged to participate in these ultra championships. When you participate in a USATF ultra championship race and win overall or in an age group, you win the title of USATF national champion, master's national champion, or age-group national champion. You receive a USATF national championship award. In addition, team competition is offered at a national championship race, so your running club can vie for the title of national champion team. Placing in the top three men's and women's race in the National 100 Km Championship selects you for the USATF 100 Km team competing at the World 100 Km championship in 2003 if you run under the stated qualifying standard.

More Ultra Championship Races - Thanks to all race directors who submitted bids for 2003. Race directors, if you are interested in hosting an ultra distance championship in 2004 submit a bid form by July 1, 2003 or by November 1, 2003. Early selection allows time to advertise a race as a USATF championship to inform runners and sponsors. Ultrarunners, encourage race directors of your favorite national-class ultra races to submit a championship bid request! The bid form and other information is available on the MUT championship web page or from MUT Championship Coordinator Janice Anderson at the address listed below.

Congratulations to the races selected for the 2003 Ultra Distance Championships!
