Lucy Carr - 2004 USATF 100K Team Member:
Nothing Is Impossible
September 2004
Taking her own advice, to “try the next step,” 2004 USATF 100K team
member, Lucy Carr, moved from marathoning to ultradistance running. “I
think that the satisfaction people used to get from completing a
marathon, they can now experience by finishing a 100K. Nothing is
impossible.”
Carr began running ultras five years ago when she realized that the 100K
is a recognized competitive distance. Living in France provides Carr
exposure to 100K racing. In Europe, the 100K distance is more standard
and there are more opportunities to race the distance, especially the
traditional 100K venue raced on roads. Carr ran her 100K PR (8:34:15)
in Catalina, Spain in 2003. She regards the 100K as a “physical and
mental test, yet still logical.”
Carr runs ultradistance because she likes the freedom and it
“disconnects me from my home, my children, my work.” The Mother of two
young children and a kindergarten teacher living and working in France
believes that running USATF ultra championships is “a good way to size
yourself up against the strongest ultrarunners in the world. It keeps
one from becoming lazy or forgetting one’s goals.” Being selected for
the 2004 100K team has given Carr “another reason to strive for my
goals.” As an American, Carr “feels lucky and proud to represent the
US, especially on September 11th,” the date of the 2004 World
Cup 100K in Holland.
