Luanne Park:  A Dual Champion

November 2002

As long as the ultra race is on a trail, Luanne Park’s champion talent, competitiveness, and spirit emerges. In 2002 Park took the Masters National title in two USATF trail ultra championships, the White River 50 Mile and the Golden Headlands 50K. She also finished as first woman overall in the Montrail Cup Series that included the 50-Mile Trail Championship. She "double-dipped" by winning the USATF Women’s Master’s 50-Mile trail title at White River in Washington in July and accumulated a great score in the Montrail Cup Series for that race. Her 9:03 performance at White River combined with her second and third place finishes in the women’s division of three closely scheduled Montrail Cup races, Way to Cool 50K, Western States 100, and Mountain Masochist 50 Miler, combined for Park to take the over all $5,000 Montrail Cup prize.

Park identifies the opportunity "to run against runners from across the U.S. who make the competition that much greater" and the combined "beauty and difficulty" of the USATF trail championship courses as the highlights of championship ultra racing. The 42-year old ultrarunner from CA describes the scenic White River Championship course as having the "longest hills I’ve ever seen."
