Kevin Setnes - Multiple
USATF Champion
January 2002
It was an Ultrarunning Magazine in 1990 that brought ultra
championships to 12-time USATF Masters Ultra Champion, Kevin Setnes',
attention. Setnes, now 47, began running ultra championships in the time
of U.S. ultrarunning when there were few ultra championships to compete
in. Although venues were limited in the early years, Setnes took
advantage of all ultra championship opportunities to "rise to the
occasion and deliver on a specific day; that is what a championship
is." Participating in 16 ultra trail 50-mile and road 100K and
24-hour championship races, taught Setnes "to peak for a major
event and over-come the conditions that are thrown at you while managing
a competitive field."
What the competitive Setnes likes best about ultra championships is
that they provide the best competition possible. He also enjoys the
sophisticated venues of ultra championship races such as those provided
by the well-organized Orlander Park 24-Hour race where Kevin ran 160.4
miles in 1993 to win the race and set a then American Road record for 24
hours. The scenic, point-to-point Edmund Fitzgerald 100K road race in
northern Minnesota in late October is a memorable venue for Kevin as
well. He also likes the lodging and meals provided to runners at the GNC
national championship in Pittsburgh along with the prize money it offers
to both open and masters runners. But a championship highlight was
sharing national titles with his wife, Kris Clark-Setnes at the 1997.
Their dual championship victories earned the Wisconsin residents a berth
on the USATF 100K that competed at World 100K Challenge in Winschoten,
The Netherlands. "It was an honor to run for the U.S. with my
teammates and my wife," says Setnes.
Compete with Kevin and participate in the variety of
2002 USATF Ultra
Championships scheduled throughout the country!
