Judge Chillingworth Murder – 1955

A Florida judge and his wife disappear and years later the story is revealed. Believed abducted, signs of struggle.

Joseph Aronowitz Murder Case – 1955

Murder and a western shoot out in the center of New York City. It was believed to be a contract murder of Aronowitz. One suspect, A. Robles, was shot in a gun battle with police.

In 1995 NYT Index, see Murders – NYC (page 737) and look for name Aronowitz. Aronowitz was to testify in a trial, and the first NYT newspaper citation is F 16, 16:6.

Emmitt Till Case – 1955

The famous case of a black youth shot for whistling at a white woman in Mississippi.

 

Various spelling for his first name may turn up additional results, try Emmett, Emmit,

Emmet.

 

In the 1955 NYT Index, if you look up Till, Emmett, it says See Murders - Mississippi.  This will be on page 736 and you will find many citations beginning with S 2, 37:3.

Victoria Zielinski Murder – 1957

A 15 year old cheerleader is bludgeoned to death with a baseball bat.  

Edgar Smith became known as “Death Row Smith” and the story about him and his crimes extends beyond the 1957 time period because of appeals and William F Buckley’s involvement.

Michael Farmer Murder – 1957

A teenage street gang kills a young boy. Seven stand trial for the murder of a 15 year old boy.

The Murder of Barbara Finch – 1959

A famous case involving a respected doctor and his mistress. It took place in Los Angeles, but LA Times begins with 1972. It involved racial issues, a deadlocked jury and a retrial.

In the 1959 NYT Index look up Murders - California (page 655) and find the name Finch.  The first citation is for Jl 22, 15:2.

The Bluebelle Yacht Case – 1961

The story of a mysterious wreck at sea and "a mass murder by a berserk man."

It happened off the Bahamas and 6 people died. Captain J. Harvey was one survivor,

and he committed suicide soon after the crime. He may have killed the others. His

own wife survived, but there was a question about an insurance policy.

Wylie – Hoffert Murders – 1963

A case cited in books, magazines, and articles that was the basis for the first Kojak

television movie. George Whitmore confessed to the crimes, but he did not commit them.

A wealthy gambler tried to cover his World Series losses by murdering his bookie.

The spelling of the victim’s first name may be Rubin in some sources.

James Chaney Murder – 1964

The murder of three civil rights activists turns into a media sensation.

The trial became known as the “Mississippi Buring Trial” In some sources, James’ last name is spelled Chayney.

In the 1964 NYT Index, look under Chaney, James Earl. The first article is Je 23, 1:7, and there is a reference to See Negroes for more citations.  The victims were missing for about 44 days before their bodies were found and this had a lot of coverage in the news because of civil rights issues.

Judith Kavanaugh Murder – 1966

Two murders linked to a counterfeit ring result in charges of "conduct unbecoming a lawyer" against F. Lee Bailey.  Two people were murdered to keep them from exposing a counterfeit ring.

The Murder of Captain MacDonald’s Family – 1970

Did three "hippies" invade an army base or did the officer himself slaughter his wife and children? There was a long delay between the crime in 1970 and the trial in 1979. There is renewed interest because of possible DNA testing at the present time.

The Migrant Farm Worker Murders – 1971

Twenty-five migrant farm workers are found murdered in a space of six weeks.

In the Los Angeles Times Index for 1972, see the personal names index in the second half of the index. You will want to look this up by using the suspects last name, Corona, Juan. Normally, you would want to look at the listings for Juan V. Corona, but in this particular index, it looks as if the LA Times made a typing error because the listings for Juan D. Corona, and Juan Corona are also for this particular case and suspect. The LA Times in this library begins with the 1972 volume, so the citations listed are from March 19, 1972-December 25, 1972. Write down the entire citation with the month, day, section, page, and column number, so you will be able to locate the articles on microfilm. In this LA Times Index, also look under Murder & Manslaughter in the subject index in the first half of the index.

In the Readers’ Guide, you will want to go to the volume that covers March 1971-February 1972, to begin research. Search under Corona, Juan V., and you will find citations to several articles in Time and Newsweek.
