Module 4 Lecture
| This week we are exploring Proposal
Arguments (Chapter 15). Proposal Arguments show why something should or
should not be done. Proposal Arguments are very important in
business where employees are often asked to evaluate a company problem
in order to take the best plan of action in solving it. The most
important part of a Proposal Argument is a call to action. You
will be asking your audience to do something in response to all of the
evidence you provide. Your goal in a Proposal Argument is to
persuade your audience to believe and act.
Pay particular attention to the special concerns for Proposal Arguments: 1. The need for presence, 2. The need of overcome people's natural conservatism, 3. The difficulty of predicting future consequences, and 4. The problem of evaluating consequences. The three main sections of a Proposal Argument are: 1. Convincing your readers that a problem exists, 2. Showing the specifics of your proposal, 3. Justification: Convincing your readers that your proposal should be enacted. (This is where your support will come from.) Essay #3 For this week's assignment, you will write a proposal argument, but first, you should brainstorm using the "For Class Discussion" section on p. 331-332. Although you will not be able to work in groups, you may still answer the questions for yourself as a way to discover how to approach your argument. You may consider a social problem facing your community instead of a problem at the college. For the paper topic, refer to the assignment on p. 332-333. Referring to option 3, pick a problem that is of importance to you. Your paper needs to be 7- 9 pages. Follow the strategy of the sample in the chapter on page 344-350. Some ideas for the topic are listed on page 334, but keep in mind that these are very narrow topics. You may also explore a social problem and provide evidence to support your solution to the social problem. Some examples of social problems include: increase in urban gangs research on television for children obesity in America environmental issues like offshore drilling or deforestation violence in schools You will also need additional outside sources to support your opinion. Be sure to conform to the conventions of MLA documentation. (I will be checking and giving you points based on your MLA documentation.) Refer to Chapter 17 for a discussion of citing sources.
