COLLEGE ALGEBRA

Course Description

This course is designed for students majoring in life or social sciences.  The main topics to be covered include linear and quadratic equations and inequalities, polynomial, rational, exponential, and logarithmic functions and their graphs, systems of linear equations, matrices, sequences and series, and the Binomial Theorem. (Formerly MATH 17)

Course Objectives

  • Solve first degree equations and inequalities

  • Solve quadratic equations and inequalities

  • Solve polynomial equations of degree 3 or higher

  • Solve systems of linear equations

  • Solve exponential and logarithmic equations

  • Graph functions and conic sections

  • Recognize and work with arithmetic sequences

  • Recognize and work with geometric sequences and series

  • Use permutations and combinations to solve counting problems

  • Use the Binomial Theorem to expand powers of a binomial

  • Solve word problems using principles of algebra
