ELEMENTARY ALGEBRA

Course Description

This is the first course in algebra.  Topics included are: real numbers, polynomials, rational expressions, first‑degree equations and inequalities, graphs of equations, linear systems of equations, exponents, and radicals, quadratic equations. (Formerly MATH 30)

Course Objectives

  • Identify the basic definitions and axioms of real numbers

  • Evaluate algebraic expressions and formulas

  • Solve first degree equations and inequalities

  • Perform the operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division with polynomials utilizing factoring methods as necessary

  • Add, subtract, multiply and divide rational expressions

  • Utilize the properties of exponents and radicals to simplify expressions and solve equations

  • Use the principles of algebra to solve applications and write solutions in complete English sentences

  • Graph and analyze linear equations

  • Construct a linear model to satisfy given criteria

  • Solve systems of equations

  • Solve quadratic equations
