Background and Project Description

This program proposes to establish a Composites Technology Center (CTC) at Cerritos College. The center will be managed by Cerritos College. This center would be part of a network of centers to transfer and deploy state-of-the-art composites manufacturing technologies for both defense and commercial purposes. The center will serve as a means by which advanced manufacturing technologies are demonstrated and taught in a full integrated manufacturing environment. These centers will serve as classrooms, workshops, and training sites for new processes and technologies, and as expert business system consulting resources.

The easy access and availability of this network of CTC's will enable regional manufacturers to deploy technology quite rapidly, to validate their manufacturing processes more economically, to train composites specialists, and to create new products, markets and jobs.

The goal of the Composite Technology Center (CTC) at Cerritos College is to provide the infrastructure for the transfer and deployment of composite manufacturing technology to manufacturing companies for implementation by:

  1. Increasing opportunities for dual use of new composite manufacturing technologies by disseminating composite manufacturing technology in formation to a broad base of companies.

  2. Accelerating the deployment of composite manufacturing technology from development laboratories to commercial product manufacturers in the form of new products, modified products, and support production tooling.

  3. Reducing the risk inherent in new technology deployment by providing increased opportunities to test and validate composite manufacturing technology and processes in state-of-the-art factory environments, thus improving the competitiveness of American composite manufacturers enhancing their ability to deliver more affordable and reliable products.

  4. Increasing jobs and job opportunities in our region by using the Composite Technology Center as an "incubator" for new businesses utilizing these newly developed products and tooling.

In an environment of intensifying global competition, technology deployment has become the strategic battleground of the international marketplace. Increasingly, successful firms are not necessarily those that discover and develop the latest innovation, but those able to swiftly bring new technology to the defense or commercial marketplace.

The establishment of a Composites Technology Center at Cerritos College with expands training services for the manufacturing community and is a significant step to move toward a coordinated resource network within a defined infrastructure.
