Title: Health, The Basics, Green Edition

Author: Rebecca Donatelle
Edition: 9th
I have posted the syllabus and class schedule on my webpage at www.cerritos.edu/nbueno and in the syllabus in TalonNet.
The text book we will be using is Health, The Basics, 9th edition by Rebecca Donatelle. The Cerritos College book store has a Custom Edition for Cerritos College which is the same as the 9th edition. So if you are purchasing through another source make certain it is the 9th edition. You may want to order it now to ensure a timely delivery.
IMPORTANT NOTE: CourseCompass is not necessary to complete this course successfully. We will be utilizing TalonNet for all graded work. However, you may want to purchase CourseCompass to utilize the study tools and access the e-book. CourseCompass is the only way to get the e-book. The college bookstore is only selling copies of the text with CourseCompass bundled, if you want to purchase a book only, or a used book you will need to use a different option for purchase.
See you at the orientation.

TEACHER / STUDENT INTERACTION

Classes will not meet in a classroom, except during orientation. You are responsible for completing the assignments on time and contacting me.
When sending email to me, next to “Subject” type your name and the purpose of the email message.
Examples: John Smith, extra credit
                J. Smith, ticket #21691, question
Do not send attachments to me, save the document in a .RTF file and submit into the Digital Dropbox in TalonNet.

Make sure you have an updated virus protection program on your computer.
You may also give assignments to the secretary in the physical education office (ex., verification of blood pressure).
When I receive your email, I will store your email messages in a personal file under your name until the end of the semester. I suggest that you always CC a copy to yourself and save the responses I send to you.

Participation / Weekly Responses (WR)

You will be expected to communicate with the class and/or me once a week. The Weekly responses are listed on TalonNet under Assignments and the Discussion Board. The assignment will be either a worksheet or a question/statement you will respond to on the discussion board.
 - CourseCompass Discussion Board – post your opinion  (3-10 sentences) and comment on a classmate’s opinion (3-10 sentences). State the classmate’s name and why you agree or disagree with him/her.  You will not be graded on the content of your discussion board postings, but on how much thought you put into your posting. Weekly Responses must be posted on the Discussion Board before midnight of the due date.
- You are required to complete all the weekly responses. Post them on the Discussion Board; do not send them to me.

-Weekly Responses are worth 10 points each; WR #8 is worth 20 points; Blood pressure assignment is worth 10 points (150 points total for participation/wrs).

ACCESS TO THE INTERNET FROM CERRITOS
Necessary if you will be using computers at Cerritos

Students are given STUDENT IDs when you register for classes. This Student ID allows you access to the campus network and the world wide internet as a free service for enrolling at Cerritos College.

If you will be using computers at Cerritos, go to the CAI (computer assisted instruction) lab in the basement of the library to activate your account (they are deleted at the end of each semester).

STUDENT IDs are the six digits assigned by the college.
PASSWORD - a password is also required of you.
The first time that you log onto the system, you will be asked for a PASSWORD. Type in the password given to you by the CAI staff member.
Then you will be asked to make up a NEW PASSWORD. Think of a password that is not your name or something too obvious. It must be 6 or more letters and/or numbers long.

WRITE DOWN YOUR PASSWORD SO THAT YOU DO NOT FORGET IT!!!

INTERNET ADDRESS for the student is your USERNAME@Cerritos.edu
(example: SMITH01@Cerritos.edu)
