The library, I believe, is the last of
our public institutions Reading Department Mission StatementThe
importance of reading proficiency cannot be overestimated. People
encounter written materials in all facets of life and benefit by
acquiring proficient reading skills, from the most basic, yet
lifesaving, ability to read the directions on a prescription label, to
reading at the higher levels of comprehension, including using such
skills as making inferences, distinguishing fact from opinion, and
analyzing written arguments. The
Reading Department's mission is to help students increase
their reading proficiency, not only at the literal level, but also at
the critical thinking level, and to equip students with the skills
necessary to tackle the information in college textbooks across the
content areas, so they can achieve their goals and become successful
students, life-long learners, highly employable individuals, and
cautious consumers. The
mission of the Reading Center is to provide opportunities for the
reinforcement and application of skills acquired through classroom
instruction. The Reading Center offers
computer-assisted-instruction, individual and small group instruction,
and tutoring by Reading faculty and staff. This instruction
includes assisting students with their understanding of course textbooks
in all areas across the curriculum. |
