Course Description:

• Reading 43 - ON-LINE is a course that is set up for students reading up to grade level 10.0 and who have access to a computer with a modem!

The course works on dictionary study, vocabulary in context, understanding the main idea, supporting details, transitions,

patterns of organization, and inferences.

How RD 43: ON-LINE works

1. We do not meet in the assigned classroom. You do the work assigned - one chapter per week - and then you contact me via e-mail when you have finished the work. I provide you with the answers to the work assigned, and you e-mail me with your scores.

2. When you have completed all ten chapters, and IF your homework scores are good enough - you take the Mid-term. This is not done by computer. You will have to do this in LC 209 the Reading Center. If you pass the mid-term, you have passed the class.

3. If you do not pass the mid-term, you will have to do more review work that I will assign to you. Once this is done, you may take the final exam. You must pass the mid-term or final exam to pass the class.

4. Attendance is not taken, but you must contact me once a week (preferably by e-mail), either to tell me that you have finished the assigned chapter, or to "check in" with me to tell me that you are behind, on jury duty, sick, dead, whatever. Also, if you are having trouble with any of the work I have assigned, you can let me know when you check in with me. Each week that you do not contact me counts as one absence.

After the third time you do not contact me, you will be dropped.

NOTE: I cannot drop you after week 14 of the semester.

Books you need for this course:

· 10 Steps for Building College Reading Skills -- FORM B (Broderick)

· Phonics for Adult Readers (Broderick)

· Magic of Thinking Big (Schwartz)

How you will be graded:

There is NO GRADE for this course!

Rd. 43 is offered as CREDIT/NO CREDIT only.

All of the work you do will prepare you for a reading test

at the midterm and at the end of the semester.

If you pass either of these tests, you pass the class.

If you do not pass the test, you will not earn "Credit" for this class,

and you will have to take the class over,

in the "traditional" lecture-type way.

Assignments

The assignments come from the 2 textbooks.

In 10 Steps for Building College Reading Skills -- FORM B, the assignments are the same: you read the chapter and then do the 3 review tests that end the chapter (including the reading selection and the multiple-choice questions that follow it) and the 6 Mastery Tests that are in the middle of the book. The only exception to this is Chapter 1 (Dictionary Use). This is explained on the next page - you won't be doing all of those Mastery Tests.

In Phonics for Adult Readers, read the chapter and do all EXERCISES. If you do the Mastery Tests, you will have to check your answer in the Reading Center (LC 40). This is because phonics symbols do not translate on a computer, so I can't provide the answers on-line. Your work for Phonics is this: for each chapter, complete the Phonics quiz for each of the chapters in the book. These quizzes are enclosed with this RD 43: ON-LINE ORIENTATION PACKET.

*Completion of Reading Center packet assignments.

-General Comprehension

-Dictionary Study

-Main Idea/Supporting Details

-Relationship Patterns

-Inference

-Completion of 2 Reading Efficiency Vocabulary levels

You may work on these assignments at your own pace. It is STRONGLY SUGGESTED that you finish one chapter per week. You cannot do more than two chapters per week without my permission. AND: You must finish the chapters from each book concurrently. In other words, you can't ask for the answers for Chapter 1 in Phonics and Chapter 2 in 10 Steps - you've got to do Chapter 1 in each book, then Chapter 2 in each book, etc.

Here are the assignments for each chapter from 10 Steps:

1. Read 10 Steps, Chapter 1. HOMEWORK: pages 25-28, 235-236, 238-240, 242.

2. Read 10 Steps, Chapter 2. HOMEWORK: pages 40-48, 247-258.

3. Read 10 Steps, Chapter 3. HOMEWORK: pages 64-71, 259-270.

4. Read 10 Steps, Chapter 4. HOMEWORK: pages 81-88, 271-282.

5. Read 10 Steps, Chapter 5. HOMEWORK: pages 101-108, 283-294.

6. Read 10 Steps, Chapter 6. HOMEWORK: pages 122-131, 295-306.

7. Read 10 Steps, Chapter 7. HOMEWORK: pages 146-154, 307-318.

8. Read 10 Steps, Chapter 8. HOMEWORK: pages 170-177, 319-330.

9. Read 10 Steps, Chapter 9. HOMEWORK: pages 196-209, 331-342.

10. Read 10 Steps, Chapter 10. HOMEWORK: pages 219-229, 343-354.

How to contact me

There are four ways that you can contact me, which you must do each week or be counted as "absent":

  1. I will be "on-line" at the following times:

Monday and Wednesday between 11:00am-12:00 noon if you want to contact me "personally." In other words, I'll be able to get back to you immediately if you have a problem that needs to be addressed. IMPORTANT NOTE: Outside of the above hours, I will answer your e-mail to me within 24 hours of your sending it. Day - night - weekend - doesn't matter when it is - you will hear from me within 24 hours of your sending me a message. ADVICE: What should you do if you don't hear from me within 24 hours?

ASSUME SOMETHING IS WRONG!!!!

POSSIBILITIES:

    1. I'm dead, in which case you are not likely to hear from me again.
    2. The system malfunctioned - it happens sometimes. Try sending the message again.
    3. You did something wrong. Try again, and "cc" yourself. This will let you know if the message went through - if you get the message you have sent, that means I have received it.
    4. Call my voice mail (562-860-2451 X2841) and let me know that you have e-mail me and not heard from me. We will figure out the problem together.

  1. You can call my voice-mail number (562-860-2451 X2841) to check in, or to tell me how you are progressing on the assignments. If you want me to call you back, I will do so if you leave your name and number - make sure your name and number are spoken CLEARLY!

  2. You can use the school's computers to contact me. I especially recommend using the computers in the Rd. Center. (LC 209), as the Instructional Aides on duty in the Reading Center will help you log on and help you with any problem you may be having.

  3. If you have a computer at home, contact me using your ISP (Internet Service Provider) at this e-mail address: renteria@cerritos.edu

. Knowing how to access and use a computer will help you in your future at this school and in your job prospects. This class is a great step in furthering your career.

· I will be sending you messages - and don't forget that answers to exercises can be sent by computer - so it will help you to succeed in this class - and others classes, as well!!! - if you know how to access and use a computer.
