Course Description:

Course content will include phonics, word structure, vocabulary study, spelling, writing and literal comprehension skills.

Course Objectives:

  1. use of phonetic skills to enable you to effectively read text;
  2. develop a consistent, smooth reading style with correct pronunciation and accent of words;
  3. use skills to increase proficiency in decoding, spelling, and word retrieval;
  4. read and interpret exercises to develop vocabulary skills;
  5. use all features of dictionary effectively;
  6. write simple sentences using learned structures;
  7. acquire a foundation of basic grammar usage;
  8. spell phonetically regular and irregular words.

What you will need for this course:

  1. Groundwork For College Reading (Broderick) 2nd ed.
  2. Groundwork Vocabulary (Townsend) 2nd. ed.
  3. American Heritage Dictionary (2nd College Edition)
  4. Notebook (8 1/2 x 11) to take notes in, pencils and pens.

    Methods of instruction:

    1. Lecture, lecture and discussion, and small groups

    2. Assigned readings

    3. Emphasis on writing competence

    4. Individually prescribed reading program on strengths/weaknesses

    How you will be graded:

    1. Oral participation

    2. Written sentences

    3. Quizzes

    4. Class participation

    5. Criterion - reference test

      6. Conferences

      7. Final examination


       

      Points Grading

      12points 100-97 = A+ 9points 89-87 = B+ 6points 79-77 = C+ 3points 69-67 = D+

      11points 96-93 = A 8points 86-83 = B 5points 76-73 = C 2points 66-63 = D

      10points 92-90 = A- 7points 82-80 = B- 4points 72-70 = C- 1points 62-60 = D

      Attendance:

      Attendance will also count for credit. If you put in extra time in the Reading Center, you will gain points:

      30+ hours = 10 points

      20-29 hours = 7 points

      10-19 hours = 3 points

       

      Other important information:

      1. Quizzes can be made up, but, only on the following class meeting and prior notification to instructor. Any make-up quizzes not approved will have 25% deducted from your score.

      Quizzes not made up will count as a zero.

      2. If you are absent from class, it will be your responsibility to notify instructor reading assignments.

      3. All assignments are to be turned in on assigned due date - no exceptions.

      4. If you are falling to far behind with course work, it is your responsibility to drop the class by the date set by the college (14 weeks)

      5. All students must take the final examination. If you do not, you will be given an incomplete grade or grade dropped one full grade point - this will be at the option of the instructor.

      6. You have the option of enrolling in this class for CR/NC, in place of a letter grade. This can be done by your request only at the office of Admissions during the first three weeks of class.
