Course Description:

Course is for students reading up to grade level 10 who want to improve their reading skills. Emphasis will be on these areas:

phonics-vocabulary, vocabulary in context, main ideas and details, relationship patterns and inferences.

What you need for this course:

(All books must be NEW, not a copy used by someone in a previous semester.)

1. Ten Steps Advancing Vocabulary/Short or Long/Nist
2. Ten Steps To Building College Reading Skills Form B (Langan)
3. Phonics For Adult Readers (Broderick)
4. Magic of Thinking Big (Schwartz)
5. A notebook to take notes in, pencils and pens
6. Purchase each of 2 Scantrons 2052 and 22000.

How you will be graded:

1. The work you do in the reading center - how much you do, how well you do it (20% of grade)
2. Quiz/test scores (20% of grade)
3. Final Comprehension test (20% of grade)
4. Written assignments (20% grade)
5. Mid-term (20% of grade)

Attendance:

Attendance will also count for credit. Class requires 54 hours of attendance on your part in lecture, and in reading center.
If at the end of semester, you have not satisfied required hours, you will either be given an incomplete grade until you make up the time. OR your final grade will be a NC.

Other important information:

1. Starting with the second week, attendance will be taken by signing a rollsheet. If you do not sign the rollsheet, you will be counted as absent, and will have to make up the time.

2. Quizzes can be made up, but only on the following class meeting and prior notification to instructor. Any make-up quizzes will have 15% deducted from your score. Quizzes not made up will count as a zero.  NO EXCEPTIONS ON LATE ASSIGNMENTS.

3. If you are absent from class, it will be your responsibility to find out all assignments.

4. All students must take the final examination. If you do not, you will be given an incomplete grade, or letter grade dropped one full grade point - this will be at the option of the instructor.

5. This course offers CR/NC in place of a letter grade.

6. Except for students receiving Financial Aid, instructor will not drop you from class. If you are falling too far behind with course work, it is your responsibility to drop the class by the college deadline (14 week of semester)

7. To move on the Reading 54, which satisfies the Reading Requirement for the A.A. degree, you must have a score of 18 on the reading test or receive a grade of CR at the end of the semester. The work you will be doing in the Reading Center is meant to get you ready for advancement.

8. Grading is as follows:

Z - 100 = A
80 - 89 = B
70 - 79 = C

Grades of 70 and above will receive CR. Below that and you will be taking this course over, either with a "D" or "F" for a course grade of NC.

Course can be taken a second time for credit. In fact, for many students, it is recommended that you take the course a second time.
